Grade two and three rapids on the Kelani
A rafting descent from Kitulgala through a run of white water, preceded by a full safety briefing and a swim test at the put-in.
Built around travellers aged fourteen and over who are confident in water and reasonably fit; not structured around young children.
Seven days built around two river systems rather than one long road trip: three nights based at Kitulgala on the Kelani River, three nights among the canyons above Belihuloya, and a single change-of-base day between them. In between sit five activity days — rafting, canyoning, a cave visit, canyon trekking with abseiling, and a mountain-bike descent from the Bambarakanda road — chosen because these are the two catchments in Sri Lanka where moving water is most consistently available to run.
Sri Lanka's rivers rise and fall with rainfall in their upper catchments, not with a booking calendar, so the order of activities on this route is set locally, day by day, by the guide team on the ground rather than fixed months in advance. A run that is grade three in July can be a gentle float in March, or closed outright after a night of heavy rain upstream — we say so before booking, and this itinerary is written to be reordered rather than followed to the letter.
This is an active week rather than a scenic drive with occasional stops: most days involve sustained time in or on the water, real physical effort, and at least one full safety briefing. It suits couples, friends travelling together and confident solo travellers who want their Sri Lanka week built around adventure sport rather than sightseeing.
Airport (CMB) → Kitulgala → Ratnapura → Belihuloya → Kalupahana (Bambarakanda) → Airport (CMB)
This journey is a starting point, not a fixed product. It can be adjusted to your dates, interests, pace, mobility, accommodation preferences and budget.
Open any day for the full plan. The exact sequence may be adjusted around weather, local conditions and your pace, nothing here is set in stone.
Arrival at Bandaranaike International Airport, met by your driver-guide, and a private transfer towards Kitulgala with a comfort stop along the way.
Settle in to your riverside lodge; a short orientation walk along the Kelani bank and kit fitting for the days ahead.
A full briefing on the week's activities from the lead guide, followed by an early dinner.
Kept deliberately light after arrival — the week's first activity begins tomorrow, not today.
A full safety briefing and swim test at the put-in, then a rafting descent of the Kelani through a run of grade two and three rapids, graded by the guide team to that morning's water level.
Return to the lodge for lunch and rest; an easy afternoon by the river.
Dinner at the lodge, with the guide talking through tomorrow's canyoning route.
Non-swimmers, or anyone unsure of their swimming ability, should say so before the swim test — not during it.
A short transfer to the canyon entry point, a full safety briefing, then a canyoning descent with a series of jumps, slides and two abseils.
Return to Kitulgala for lunch and recovery; a free afternoon at the lodge.
Dinner at leisure.
Canyoning carries real physical weight, and evacuation from inside the canyon is on foot only. Knee, shoulder and heart conditions, and any weight or fitness limits set by the operator, must be declared before departure.
A short drive up to Belilena cave above Kitulgala, entered with head torches for a guided walk through chambers where some of the region's oldest human remains were recovered.
Depart Kitulgala and drive to Belihuloya via Ratnapura, with time in the gem-trading town if the schedule allows.
Arrive at your second base in Belihuloya and settle in for the next three nights.
A stop at Ratnapura's gem museum, subject to opening hours.
A change-of-base day: a cave visit followed by several hours on the road rather than a further water activity.
Transfer to the trailhead, then stream trekking through the Belihuloya canyons, wading and scrambling along the watercourse.
Abseiling sections within the canyon, finishing at a plunge pool for a swim before the walk out.
Return to the lodge for dinner.
The plunge pool is cool at altitude even in the warmer months. Sturdy, grippy footwear is essential on the wet rock throughout.
Transfer up to the Bambarakanda road above Kalupahana; bikes and helmets are fitted and checked, followed by a safety briefing.
A mountain-bike descent down through the Belihuloya valley on gravel road and estate track, with stops for views along the way.
Return to Belihuloya for a final dinner at the lodge.
A viewpoint stop at Bambarakanda Falls, Sri Lanka's tallest, on the way to the start point.
A road bike, not a technical trail bike; confident cycling ability on loose surfaces is enough, no prior mountain-biking experience is assumed.
An early breakfast, then a private transfer from Belihuloya back towards the airport — the longest drive of the week.
Continue the transfer via Ratnapura and Avissawella, arriving with a safe buffer before your flight.
Departure.
The longest transfer of the trip, planned for from the outset — we recommend an evening flight rather than an early-afternoon one, with comfort stops built in along the way.
This route illustration is schematic and not geographically exact. Nights shown follow the standard plan and shift with any customisation.
We hold no fixed hotel list. Named properties come with your quotation, because the right choice depends on availability, season, your preferences and confirmed supplier rates.
Your choice is carried into the enquiry form below — you can still mix levels night by night there. Nothing here is booked automatically.
Where we say with adjustments, the adjustment is straightforward, tell us what you need in the enquiry form and the quotation reflects it.
Most days involve sustained time in or on the water; this is among the most physically demanding routes in our range.
Levels swing with rainfall upstream; a run graded three in peak season can be a float outside it, and the guide team grades it fresh each morning.
Jumps are optional; the two abseils are not. Knee, shoulder and heart conditions must be declared before departure.
There is no vehicle access inside the canyons, so any injury or fatigue is walked out rather than driven out.
Wet rock and wading sections throughout, plus an unlit cave interior — sturdy, grippy footwear is essential.
Kitulgala sits low and humid; Belihuloya, higher and more open, is noticeably cooler in the mornings and evenings.
Belihuloya back to the airport on day 7 — the longest transfer of the week, timed for an evening flight.
Sri Lanka weather varies by region and can change. Two monsoon systems affect different coasts at different times, so no month carries a guarantee.
Add an extra night or two for a second rafting run or a rest day.
Where instructors are available, in place of or alongside the raft descent.
Move some or all nights to larger, more spacious lodges.
Insert Udawalawe or Sinharaja before or after this route.
Break the day-7 drive with an overnight near Ratnapura instead of returning direct to the airport.
We do not make carbon-neutral or conservation claims we cannot verify. We do hold ourselves to practical standards on every journey we plan.
Passport and entry requirements are the traveller's responsibility.
Travel insurance that covers water sports and adventure activities is strongly recommended.
Final availability of guides, equipment and accommodation is confirmed only after booking.
River and canyon conditions may require the order of activities to change at short notice, including on the day itself.
Driving times are approximate and can lengthen after heavy rain.
Any pre-existing knee, shoulder, heart or swimming-related condition must be declared before departure.
Hotel choices remain subject to availability.
No — the Kelani's grade depends on rainfall in the upper catchment. The guide team grades the run fresh each morning; outside the May-to-September window it is often a gentler grade two float rather than grade three.
We build this route around travellers fourteen and over. Younger children are not well suited to the swim test, canyoning or abseiling, and we would suggest a different route for a family with younger children.
You need to be a confident, capable swimmer. A swim test in calm water precedes the rafting, and canyoning involves swimming between sections. Tell us before booking if you or anyone in your group is not a confident swimmer.
Declare it before departure. Canyoning carries real physical weight, and evacuation from inside a canyon is on foot only — there is no vehicle access partway through, so conditions that affect mobility need to be known in advance, not discovered mid-descent.
No. Jumps are always optional and can be walked around at the guide's discretion. The two abseils are not optional, since they are usually the only way through that part of the canyon.
Belihuloya sits well inland, and there is no way to shorten the roughly five-to-five-and-a-half-hour drive back to the coast. We plan for it from day one — book an evening flight rather than an early-afternoon one, and the day is otherwise unscheduled.
Yes, from January to April, but expect gentler water: lower river levels mean shorter canyon runs and a milder rafting grade. We would talk most travellers out of October to December, when both the wet-zone belt and the approach roads are at their least dependable.
Not entirely. River and canyon conditions on the ground can move an activity to a different day within the week, particularly after heavy rain. We tell you before it happens, not after.
It is a moderate, guided walk with head torches through natural passages — some low clearances and uneven footing, but no climbing or abseiling. It is not suitable for anyone uncomfortable in confined, unlit spaces.
Final accommodation at both bases is confirmed during quotation, once specific properties and dates are checked for availability.
Tell us how you like to travel and we will shape this route around you. You will receive a proposal prepared by a person, never an automated, generic package.
