Who it suits

Built around travellers over 55 and anyone who would rather see six places properly than nine in passing. There is no upper age limit; walking, start times and the length of each day are all adjustable, before the trip and on the day.

Overview

What this journey is about.

The standard Sri Lankan circuit covers the same ground this one does — the Cultural Triangle, Kandy, tea country, Ella, Yala and the south coast — but it usually does it in ten or eleven days. That means a different hotel most nights and a suitcase repacked before breakfast. This version takes eighteen days to cover the same route. Every base gets at least two nights, no transfer between bases runs much over three and a half hours, and two full days are set aside for nothing in particular.

It is designed for a first visit made without hurry: travellers over 55, retired couples with time to spend, and small private groups. A private vehicle and driver stay with you from the airport and back to it, so the shape of each day is yours to change on the morning rather than fixed months in advance. Where a site is demanding — a rock climb, an uneven archaeological floor, a long flight of temple steps — the gentler version is planned alongside it, not offered as an apology afterwards.

The trade-off is worth stating plainly. This route leans on the December to April window in the south. From late May to September the south-west monsoon makes the coast and the deep south parks unreliable, and in those months we would point you towards the eastern fifteen-day route instead.

What makes it distinctive

  • Seven bases across seventeen nights — a minimum of two nights at every one
  • No transfer between bases much over three and a half hours
  • Two rest days with no departure before noon, at Habarana and at Weligama
  • One optional early start on the whole route; the safari is an afternoon drive
  • A gentler alternative prepared at every site that involves steps or a climb

The route at a glance

Airport (CMB) → Negombo → Sigiriya & Habarana → Kandy → Nuwara Eliya → Ella → Tissamaharama (Yala) → Weligama → Airport (CMB)

This journey is a starting point, not a fixed product. It can be adjusted to your dates, interests, pace, mobility, accommodation preferences and budget.

Journey highlights

Reasons this route endures.

Sigiriya, from two directions at once

First light at the rock, arranged so nobody is left behind: the Pidurangala path for those who want the climb, the water gardens, moat and lower terraces for those who do not, with both parties meeting for breakfast afterwards and comparing notes.

A Kandyan workshop afternoon

Time with a brass and lacquer workshop family at Pilimathalawa, watching work that has been done in the same few streets for generations, followed by the lake bund walk in Kandy at dusk.

The Nanu Oya to Ella rail leg

Roughly two and a half hours through tea country in reserved seats, subject to availability, while the vehicle carries the luggage ahead to Ella — so you board with a camera and a jacket and nothing else.

One unhurried afternoon in Yala

A single game drive entering at 14:30 rather than joining the dawn convoy at the gate. Fewer vehicles, better light towards the end, and no 4:30am alarm. Sightings cannot be guaranteed.

Two rest days, written in

Day 4 at Habarana and day 17 at Weligama have no departure before noon and no fixed programme, each placed the day after one of the two longest transfers on the route.

Tea country from a veranda

Three days in the hills built around one working estate and one factory visit, subject to opening hours, with the rest of the time spent at altitude doing very little.

The Cultural Triangle with room to breathe

Four nights at one address covering Sigiriya, a level-ground ancient city and an afternoon jeep drive — with a rest day in the middle rather than three sites in two days.

A slow south-coast finish

Two nights at Weligama with the stilt-fishing coast on the doorstep and Galle Fort about forty minutes away, kept as an option rather than an obligation.

Day by day

18 days, carefully sequenced.

Open any day for the full plan. The exact sequence may be adjusted around weather, local conditions and your pace, nothing here is set in stone.

Airport (CMB) → Negombo · 20–40 minutes

Day 01Arrival, and nothing else

Easy

Morning

Private meet-and-greet in the arrivals hall at Bandaranaike International Airport and a short transfer to Negombo, twenty to forty minutes up the coast. Nothing is scheduled around it.

Afternoon

Check in and stop. Depending on when you land, that might be a shower and a long sleep, or a slow walk to the beach with your driver pointing out where things are.

Evening

Dinner at the hotel or somewhere nearby that your driver knows. An early night is the plan.

Driving

Distance
About 12 km
Meals

Stay
Negombo
Good to know

Negombo is chosen over Colombo for the first two nights precisely because it is close to the airport — no long leg on an arrival day.

Negombo

Day 02Recovering, at the pace of a fishing town

Easy

Morning

A late breakfast. If you are awake and willing, the fish market and the beach where the outrigger boats come in are both a short drive, and both are early-morning affairs.

Afternoon

Negombo at a stroll: the Dutch-era canal, the old fort gate, one or two of the churches that gave the town its nickname. Level ground throughout, and short.

Evening

A first proper Sri Lankan dinner, with your driver on hand to translate a menu if it helps.

Meals
Breakfast (included) · Lunch & dinner — to be confirmed
Stay
Negombo
Optional

A short boat trip on the Negombo lagoon at the end of the afternoon, weather and water conditions permitting.

Good to know

The fish market is genuinely pungent and busy. It is worth seeing and easy to skip; nobody is obliged.

Negombo → Sigiriya & Habarana · 3.5–4 hours excluding stops

Day 03North into the dry zone

Easy

Morning

Leave after breakfast and head inland through coconut country towards Kurunegala and Dambulla, with comfort stops built in rather than squeezed in.

Afternoon

Arrive at your accommodation near Habarana, unpack once — this is home for the next four nights — and sit down. There is nothing else on today.

Evening

Dinner at the property. The dry-zone evening is warm, and the tank in front of most of these hotels draws birds at dusk.

Driving
3.5–4 hours excluding stops
Distance
About 170 km
Meals
Breakfast (included) · Lunch & dinner — to be confirmed
Stay
Habarana, Sigiriya or Dambulla
Optional

A stop at a working coconut or cashew stall on the Kurunegala road, if the timing and the appetite are there.

Good to know

This is the longest driving day on the route. It is placed on day 3, after two recovery nights, and it is followed immediately by a rest day.

Habarana

Day 04A rest day, and it means it

Easy

Morning

Nothing. The vehicle is there if you want it and stays parked if you do not. Breakfast runs late at most of these properties.

Afternoon

If you want something gentle: the Habarana tank bund, a village lane with paddy on both sides, or an hour in the shade with a book. All of it is level and none of it is far.

Evening

An early dinner. Tomorrow has the one early start on this itinerary, and it is optional.

Meals
Breakfast (included) · Lunch & dinner — to be confirmed
Stay
Habarana, Sigiriya or Dambulla
Optional

A late-afternoon jeep drive in Minneriya, Kaudulla or Hurulu Eco Park, chosen on where the elephants have actually been moving that week. Sightings cannot be guaranteed.

Good to know

The rest days are the point of this itinerary, not padding. We would rather you used this one than filled it.

Sigiriya · 30–60 minutes local

Day 05First light at the rock, two ways

Easy to moderate

Morning

An early start at the rock, arranged in two halves. Those who want the climb take the Pidurangala path opposite, which gives the classic view back towards Sigiriya. Those who would rather not take the water gardens, the moat, the boulder gardens and the lower terraces of Sigiriya itself — level, shaded in stretches, and the more interesting archaeology of the two. Both parties finish at roughly the same time and meet for breakfast.

Afternoon

Back to the hotel and out of the sun. The Sigiriya Museum is air-conditioned and well done if the afternoon needs something in it.

Evening

At leisure.

Driving
30–60 minutes local
Meals
Breakfast (included) · Lunch & dinner — to be confirmed
Stay
Habarana, Sigiriya or Dambulla
Optional

The full summit climb of Sigiriya Rock itself — around 1,200 steps, including exposed metal stairways — for those who want it and have asked in advance.

Good to know

The one early start on this route, and it is optional. Vertigo, knees and heat all count as good reasons to take the gardens instead — please say so rather than pushing on.

Dambulla & Minneriya region · 1.5–2.5 hours local across the day

Day 06Painted caves, then an afternoon jeep

Easy to moderate

Morning

The Dambulla Cave Temple — five painted rock shrines under an overhang, with several centuries of murals inside. The approach is a steady flight of steps in the sun.

Afternoon

Rest through the heat, then a private jeep drive in Minneriya, Kaudulla or Hurulu Eco Park. The park is chosen close to your travel date on where the herds have been, not booked months ahead on a guess.

Evening

Back for dinner, dusty and generally pleased.

Driving
1.5–2.5 hours local across the day
Meals
Breakfast (included) · Lunch & dinner — to be confirmed
Stay
Habarana, Sigiriya or Dambulla
Optional

A guided walk through the ancient city of Polonnaruwa instead of Dambulla — largely level ground, and the vehicle can drop you between clusters.

Good to know

Shoulders and knees must be covered inside the cave temple, and shoes come off at the entrance — the stone can be hot underfoot. Socks help.

Habarana → Kandy · 2.5–3.5 hours excluding stops

Day 07Down to the hill capital

Easy

Morning

Leave after a normal breakfast and drive south through Matale, with a spice garden stop if that appeals.

Afternoon

Settle in at Kandy, then visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic timed to one of the ceremonies rather than to the middle of the crowd, with clear guidance on dress beforehand.

Evening

Dinner in town or at the property. Kandy is compact and your driver knows the streets.

Driving
2.5–3.5 hours excluding stops
Distance
About 100 km
Meals
Breakfast (included) · Lunch & dinner — to be confirmed
Stay
Kandy
Optional

A spice garden at Matale on the way down, with an explanation of what actually grows here rather than a sales room.

Good to know

Traffic into Kandy is unpredictable and can add half an hour without warning. Shoulders and knees covered at the temple; shoes are left at the entrance.

Kandy

Day 08Gardens, and an afternoon off

Easy

Morning

The Royal Botanical Gardens at Peradeniya — flat, wide, shaded avenues, plenty of benches and one of the better places on this route simply to sit. Two hours is enough; four is easy to spend.

Afternoon

Free. The Kandy market, a tea lounge, the National Museum, or the hotel.

Evening

A Kandyan dance performance is on most evenings in town, and takes about an hour on fixed seating.

Meals
Breakfast (included) · Lunch & dinner — to be confirmed
Stay
Kandy
Optional

A traditional Kandyan dance and drumming performance, subject to the evening schedule at the venue.

Good to know

Kandy sits at about 500 m and is noticeably cooler and wetter than the dry zone you have just left.

Kandy & Pilimathalawa · 1–1.5 hours local

Day 09Brass, lacquer and a lake at dusk

Easy

Morning

Yours. Most people use it for laundry, letters and a second look at somewhere they liked yesterday.

Afternoon

Out to Pilimathalawa, about twenty minutes west, to spend time with a family who work brass and lacquer — beating, chasing and turning, in a workshop attached to the house. It is unhurried, there is no minimum spend, and questions are welcome.

Evening

Back for the walk around the Kandy lake bund at dusk, which is level, about three kilometres if you do the full circuit, and shorter if you do not. Egrets, monitor lizards and half the town out walking.

Driving
1–1.5 hours local
Meals
Breakfast (included) · Lunch & dinner — to be confirmed
Stay
Kandy
Optional

A wood-carving or gem-cutting workshop in the same few streets, if brass is not the draw.

Good to know

Any purchase you make goes to the family directly. We take no commission on it and never arrange stops we have not told you about.

Kandy → Nuwara Eliya · About 3 hours excluding stops — longer in rain or holiday traffic

Day 10Up into the tea

Easy

Morning

Climb out of Kandy through Gampola and Pussellawa, with the Ramboda falls and a series of viewpoints where the tea slopes open up. The distance is small; the road is not quick.

Afternoon

Arrive at Nuwara Eliya at around 1,900 m, check in, and let the temperature do its work. The air here is genuinely cold by Sri Lankan standards.

Evening

A fire if the property has one, and an early dinner.

Driving
About 3 hours excluding stops — longer in rain or holiday traffic
Distance
About 75 km
Meals
Breakfast (included) · Lunch & dinner — to be confirmed
Stay
Nuwara Eliya
Optional

A first tea stop on the way up, at whichever estate along the A5 is receiving visitors that day.

Good to know

Pack a warm layer where you can reach it — the temperature drops sharply in the last hour of this drive, and evenings here can sit in single figures.

Nuwara Eliya · 1–2 hours local

Day 11Leaf to cup, then a long afternoon

Easy

Morning

A working tea estate and factory: withering lofts, rolling floor, the firing room and the sorting tables, with someone who works there explaining why the same bush produces four different grades. Subject to the factory operating that day.

Afternoon

Nuwara Eliya at a stroll — Victoria Park if the beds are in, the Gregory Lake path, the old post office, the racecourse. Or the veranda, a tea tray and the cloud coming up the valley, which is what most people choose.

Evening

At leisure, indoors and warm.

Driving
1–2 hours local
Meals
Breakfast (included) · Lunch & dinner — to be confirmed
Stay
Nuwara Eliya
Optional

A comparative tasting of estate grades side by side, arranged at the estate where they offer it.

Good to know

Some estate paths are steep and uneven between the fields. The factory floor itself is a working building with stairs; there is a ground-floor route through the main stages if stairs are a problem.

Nuwara Eliya → Nanu Oya → Ella · 30 minutes to Nanu Oya; the train runs roughly 2.5 hours; the vehicle covers the same leg by road in about 2.5 hours

Day 12The rail leg through tea country

Easy to moderate

Morning

A short drive down to Nanu Oya station and, in reserved seats where we have secured them, the train to Ella — roughly two and a half hours through tea gardens, tunnels and the Idalgashinna ridge. Your driver takes the luggage ahead by road and meets the train.

Afternoon

Arrive at Ella, settle in, and look at the gap in the hills that the town exists for.

Evening

Dinner in Ella's small centre, which is walkable end to end in ten minutes.

Driving
30 minutes to Nanu Oya; the train runs roughly 2.5 hours; the vehicle covers the same leg by road in about 2.5 hours
Meals
Breakfast (included) · Lunch & dinner — to be confirmed
Stay
Ella
Optional

A shorter rail section — Nanu Oya to Haputale or Bandarawela — if two and a half hours on a train seat is more than you want.

Good to know

Reserved seats on the Nanu Oya to Ella section open thirty days ahead and are often gone within hours. We hold the vehicle on the same route as a fallback and we do not promise a particular seat, a particular carriage or a window.

Ella

Day 13A bridge, a ridge and a slow day

Easy to moderate

Morning

Nine Arch Bridge, timed where possible for a train crossing — the schedule is approximate and we treat a crossing as a bonus rather than a fixture. The approach from the Ella side is a track with steps and roots in places.

Afternoon

Free. Little Adam's Peak is the gentlest of the local walks, a steady path with steps at the end and about ninety minutes round trip, and it is entirely optional.

Evening

At leisure. Ella cools quickly once the sun is behind the ridge.

Meals
Breakfast (included) · Lunch & dinner — to be confirmed
Stay
Ella
Optional

Ravana Falls, viewed from the roadside on the Wellawaya road, which needs no walking at all.

Good to know

Nine Arch Bridge is on an active line. Standing on the track for a photograph is a genuinely bad idea and our drivers will say so.

Ella → Tissamaharama · 2.5–3 hours excluding stops

Day 14Off the escarpment, into the deep south

Easy

Morning

The drop through Ella Gap towards Wellawaya — one of the more dramatic stretches of road on the island, and largely downhill — with a stop at Ravana Falls or the rock carvings at Buduruwagala if the day suits.

Afternoon

Arrive at Tissamaharama, check in and rest. The heat down here is a different proposition from the hills you left this morning.

Evening

The Tissa Wewa tank at dusk, five minutes away, where the birds come in. Level walking on a bund, or the same view from the vehicle.

Driving
2.5–3 hours excluding stops
Distance
About 110 km
Meals
Breakfast (included) · Lunch & dinner — to be confirmed
Stay
Tissamaharama or Kataragama
Optional

The rock-cut standing Buddha figures at Buduruwagala, a short and level walk from the car park.

Good to know

The descent is roughly 1,000 m in about an hour. Ears pop, and the temperature climbs by ten degrees or more by the time you reach the bottom.

Yala National Park · 30–45 minutes each way to the park entrance, plus the drive itself

Day 15One afternoon in leopard country

Easy to moderate

Morning

Nothing scheduled. The point of doing this in the afternoon is that you are not standing at a park gate at half past five with sixty other vehicles.

Afternoon

A private jeep, entering at around 14:30 for the second session — elephants, buffalo, crocodile, sloth bear if you are fortunate, and leopard if you are more fortunate still. The last hour before the gates close is usually the best of it for light and for movement.

Evening

Back for a late dinner and a shower, in that order.

Driving
30–45 minutes each way to the park entrance, plus the drive itself
Meals
Breakfast (included) · Lunch & dinner — to be confirmed
Stay
Tissamaharama or Kataragama
Optional

A second drive on the following morning before departure, for those who decide one afternoon was not enough.

Good to know

Safari jeeps are open-sided, the tracks are rough and dusty, and there is no shade for stretches. Sightings of any species cannot be guaranteed — these are wild animals in a very large park.

Tissamaharama → Weligama · 3–3.5 hours excluding stops

Day 16West along the coast

Easy

Morning

Out through Hambantota and along the southern coast, with the sea on your left for most of it. Comfort stops as needed, and one longer one for lunch.

Afternoon

Arrive at Weligama and stop moving. This is the last address of the trip and there are two nights of it.

Evening

First evening by the sea.

Driving
3–3.5 hours excluding stops
Distance
About 140 km
Meals
Breakfast (included) · Lunch & dinner — to be confirmed
Stay
Weligama, Mirissa or Midigama
Optional

The rock temple at Mulkirigala on the way, for those who still have a flight of steps left in them, or the Tangalle coast for a lunch stop instead.

Good to know

The second-longest transfer on the route, and the reason day 17 is a rest day. It is placed in the morning so the afternoon is genuinely free.

Weligama

Day 17The second rest day

Easy

Morning

Nothing. Breakfast when you wake up, the sea when you feel like it.

Afternoon

Optional and entirely yours: Galle Fort is about forty minutes west — ramparts, Dutch-era streets, cafés and shade, and level walking once you are inside the walls. Or the stilt-fishing stretch of coast towards Koggala. Or the same chair you were in this morning.

Evening

A last dinner by the sea.

Meals
Breakfast (included) · Lunch & dinner — to be confirmed
Stay
Weligama, Mirissa or Midigama
Optional

Whale watching from Mirissa, roughly November to April. Worth saying plainly: boats leave around 6am, so taking this option gives up the rest day. Sightings cannot be guaranteed and trips are cancelled outright in poor sea states.

Good to know

This day exists to be wasted. If you find yourself planning it, that is a sign the itinerary is working and you are not.

Weligama → Airport (CMB) · 2.5–3 hours to the airport

Day 18Departure

Easy

Morning

Breakfast, a final hour by the sea, and a check-out timed backwards from your flight rather than from the hotel clock.

Afternoon

Transfer to Bandaranaike International Airport, largely on the Southern Expressway, with a comfort stop and a safe buffer built in before check-in.

Evening

Departure.

Driving
2.5–3 hours to the airport
Distance
About 175 km
Meals
Breakfast (included)
Stay
Not included
Good to know

This is a two-and-a-half to three-hour leg on a departure day, and we say so rather than discovering it together. Timings are planned around your flight, not the other way round.

Signature experiences

Moments worth travelling for.

What a second night actually buys

Unpacking once. A morning where nobody is waiting in the lobby. Laundry that comes back. Time to go back to the place you liked yesterday. The two-night minimum is the single change that makes this route different from the ten-day version of the same circuit.

The gentler half, planned alongside

At Sigiriya, Dambulla, the tea factory and Nine Arch Bridge there is a version with steps and a version without, and both are worked out in advance. Choosing the second is a choice, not a concession, and it is made on the morning rather than months earlier.

Afternoons instead of dawns

The safari enters Yala at 14:30 and the Cultural Triangle jeep drive goes out after four. Exactly one early start survives on the whole route, at Sigiriya, and even that one is optional. Fewer vehicles, better light at the end, and no 4:30am alarms.

Tea, from leaf to cup

A working factory in the hills shows how withering, rolling, firing and sorting turn one green leaf into four different grades, and why these slopes reshaped the island. Subject to the factory operating on the day.

Craft, in the hands of the family that makes it

An afternoon at a brass and lacquer workshop at Pilimathalawa, in the room where the work happens rather than a showroom built for coaches. No minimum spend, no commission taken by us, and no undisclosed stops anywhere on this route.

Physical activity and comfort

Honest numbers, no surprises.

Overall difficulty
Easy to moderate

Almost all walking is optional, and every site with steps or a climb has a level alternative prepared alongside it.

Longest driving day
About 3.5–4 hours

Negombo to Habarana on day 3. Nothing else on the route runs longer, and that day is followed immediately by a rest day.

Early starts
One, and it is optional

The Sigiriya morning on day 5. The Yala safari is a 14:30 afternoon drive rather than a dawn queue at the gate.

Reserved train seats
Not something we can promise

Reserved seats on the Nanu Oya to Ella section open thirty days ahead and are often taken within hours. We hold the vehicle on the same route as a fallback and never promise a particular seat, carriage or window.

The Yala calendar
Block 1 closes seasonally

Usually for part of September and October. The drive then moves to Block 5 or Lunugamvehera, where the terrain is more open and the drive from Tissamaharama is longer — we build the extra time into the day.

Rest opportunities
Two full rest days

Days 4 and 17 have no departure before noon and no programme at all. Days 1, 2 and 18 are also deliberately light.

Terrain and climate
Mixed, and it changes fast

Paved town streets, uneven archaeological ground, one rock path, dusty park tracks. Single-figure evenings at Nuwara Eliya and low-thirties heat at Tissamaharama, four days apart.

Customization options.

Slow it further

Add a third night at Kandy, Nuwara Eliya or Ella — the structure absorbs extra nights without redesigning the route.

Swap the south for the east

From May to September, replace Tissamaharama and Weligama with Trincomalee or Pasikuda, which are in season then.

Reduce the walking further

Replace Dambulla with Polonnaruwa, drop Pidurangala entirely, and use the vehicle inside the botanical gardens.

A second safari

Add a morning drive at Yala, or a full day at Udawalawe or Bundala on the way west.

A national guide throughout

A licensed guide alongside the driver for the full eighteen days, or for the Cultural Triangle only.

Upgrade selected nights

Move the four Habarana nights or the coastal finish to premium properties without changing the rest.

Add a wellness stay

Two or three Ayurveda nights on the west coast before departure, in place of one hill-country night.

Skip the train

Take the whole Nuwara Eliya to Ella leg by road with the same viewpoints, if a train seat is not appealing.

Responsible travel

Travelling well, without grand claims.

We do not make carbon-neutral or conservation claims we cannot verify. We do hold ourselves to practical standards on every journey we plan.

  • Respecting wildlife-viewing distances at Yala and Minneriya, and never crowding, baiting or chasing animals for a photograph
  • Working with registered local guides, jeep operators and suppliers where possible
  • Clear guidance on dress and conduct at temples, and at Kataragama in particular
  • Buying directly from the Pilimathalawa workshop family, with no commission taken by us on anything you purchase
  • No undisclosed shopping stops anywhere on the route — every stop is on the itinerary before you travel
  • Reducing avoidable single-use plastic, starting with refillable water where practical
  • Following national-park regulations, including zone rules, speed limits and closure decisions
Before you enquire

Important information.

Passport and entry requirements are the traveller's responsibility.

Travel insurance is strongly recommended, and more so for travellers over 70.

Final availability and named properties are confirmed only after booking.

Wildlife sightings cannot be guaranteed.

Reserved train seats cannot be guaranteed; the road alternative is held for the same leg.

Yala Block 1 closes seasonally, usually for part of September and October.

Weather and local conditions may require the order of a day to change.

Driving times are approximate and exclude stops.

Mobility, dietary and medical requirements should be shared before confirmation so the route and the hotels can be matched to them.

Exact inclusions are stated in the final quotation.

Questions, answered plainly

Frequently asked questions.

Why eighteen days for a route usually sold in ten?

Because the ten-day version moves hotel almost every night. Eighteen days over the same ground gives a minimum of two nights at every base, four at Habarana, and two days with nothing scheduled. The sights are the same; the recovery time is not.

Can you promise us reserved seats on the Ella train?

No, and we would rather say so now than on the platform. Reserved seats on the Nanu Oya to Ella section open thirty days ahead and are frequently gone within hours of opening. We book as early as the system allows, we hold the vehicle on the same route as a fallback, and we never promise a specific seat, carriage or window. If seats do not come through, the road leg via Welimada covers the same country and you will know well before you travel.

What happens if Yala Block 1 is closed when we travel?

Block 1 usually closes for part of September and October. When it does, the drive moves to Block 5 or to Lunugamvehera. The terrain there is more open, there are fewer vehicles, and the drive from Tissamaharama is longer — we build that extra time into the day rather than shortening the safari.

Is there anything on this route we have to climb?

Nothing. The Sigiriya summit and the Pidurangala path are both optional and both have a level alternative running at the same time. Dambulla has a flight of steps and can be swapped for Polonnaruwa, which is largely flat. The tea factory has a ground-floor route. The Nine Arch Bridge track can be skipped in favour of the tea lanes above the town.

How long is the longest driving day?

About three and a half to four hours, from Negombo to Habarana on day 3, and it is followed immediately by a rest day. The second-longest is Tissamaharama to Weligama on day 16, at around three to three and a half hours, which is also followed by a rest day. Nothing else on the route runs much over three hours.

Is this suitable if one of us walks slowly or uses a stick?

Generally yes, with the comfortable accommodation tier and a few substitutions we would agree in advance. Tell us the specifics before quotation — stairs, distance, standing time, whether a wheelchair is involved — and we will match the hotels and the sites to them rather than improvising on the day.

Can we travel this route in July or August?

We would advise against it. The south-west monsoon makes Weligama and the deep south parks unreliable from late May to September, and this route spends its last five days there. For those months our eastern fifteen-day route, based on Trincomalee and Pasikuda, is the honest recommendation. If your dates are fixed and you want to see the island anyway, we can rebuild the second half around the east coast.

Are wildlife sightings guaranteed?

No. Yala holds one of the denser leopard populations anywhere, and the Minneriya region draws large elephant herds, but these are wild animals in very large parks. We improve the odds by choosing the park close to your travel date on recent movement, and by entering Yala in the afternoon when there are fewer vehicles. No sighting can be promised.

Which hotels will we stay in?

We do not name properties before quotation, because availability at seven bases across eighteen days moves constantly. What we commit to is the character and setting of each stay and its access position — lift, ground-floor rooms, stairs — and every property is named and confirmed in the quotation before you approve anything.

When is the booking confirmed?

After you approve the final quotation and availability is confirmed. The quotation states exactly what is included, which properties, and what remains optional. Nothing is charged before that point.
