Who it suits

Written for adults who would rather settle in than move on — most often travellers over 55, and couples of any age who have had enough of one-night hotels. Nothing on the route requires a climb, and no day depends on being able to walk far.

Overview

What this journey is about.

Fourteen days and four hotels. One night near the airport to absorb the flight, then five nights at Habarana in the dry zone, four at Kandy in the hills and three at Bentota on the south-west coast — and that is the entire moving part of this journey. Every excursion is a return trip. You leave after breakfast, or before it on two mornings, and you come back to the same room, the same terrace and the same staff who by day three already know how you take your tea.

The list of places is not shorter than a conventional two-week tour; the list of hotels is. Polonnaruwa in the first hour after the gates open, the water gardens beneath Sigiriya, an afternoon jeep in elephant country, the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic at a considered hour, the royal palms at Peradeniya, and the Galle Fort ramparts before the day-trip coaches arrive. What is missing, deliberately, is the string of one-night stops that usually carries a traveller between them.

We are equally plain about what this route costs you. There is one long driving day in the fortnight, Kandy to Bentota, and it is given a day of its own with nothing else on it. There are two early mornings, both optional. And there is a rest day written into each base with nothing scheduled before four in the afternoon — not as filler, but because a fortnight without them is not actually a rest.

What makes it distinctive

  • Four hotels in fourteen days — one airport night and three bases
  • A rest day at each base, with nothing scheduled before four in the afternoon
  • One long transfer in the whole fortnight, on a day of its own
  • No climb required anywhere on the route
  • Bentota swaps to Pasikuda from May to September, with a longer closing transfer

The route at a glance

Airport (CMB) → Negombo → Habarana → Kandy → Bentota → Airport (CMB)

This journey is a starting point, not a fixed product. It can be adjusted to your dates, interests, pace, mobility, accommodation preferences and budget.

Journey highlights

Reasons this route endures.

Polonnaruwa in the first hour

The quadrangle at Polonnaruwa in the hour after opening, before the heat and before the buses — covered by electric buggy between the monuments, subject to availability at the site, and back at Habarana in time for lunch.

A boat on a village tank

A late-afternoon boat on a village tank near Habarana, drifting slowly while the far bank is watched for elephants coming down to drink. It depends on the season and the water level, and sightings cannot be promised.

The royal palms at Peradeniya

A slow morning at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Peradeniya, on level paths beneath the avenue of royal palms — one of the few major sights in Sri Lanka that asks nothing of your knees.

Three rest days, written in

One rest day at each base, with nothing scheduled before four in the afternoon. They are part of the plan, not a gap in it.

Galle Fort at seven in the morning

The ramparts walked at seven, an hour from Bentota, ahead of the day-trip coaches — then breakfast inside the walls while the town wakes up.

The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic

Kandy's living temple, visited at a considered hour with guidance on dress and conduct. A four-night base means we can move the visit if a ceremony makes it crowded.

An afternoon in elephant country

A private jeep in Minneriya, Kaudulla or Hurulu Eco Park, the reserve chosen close to the date on recent wildlife movement. Wild animals, so nothing is guaranteed.

Day by day

14 days, carefully sequenced.

Open any day for the full plan. The exact sequence may be adjusted around weather, local conditions and your pace, nothing here is set in stone.

Airport → Negombo · 20–40 minutes

Day 01Arrival, and nothing else

Easy

Morning

Private meet-and-greet at Bandaranaike International Airport and a short transfer to Negombo — the closest bed to the terminal, chosen so that the first day asks nothing of you.

Afternoon

Rest, unpack, sleep off the flight. If you arrive early and feel like moving, your driver can take you along the beach road or to the lagoon where the boats come in.

Evening

An early dinner at the hotel or somewhere nearby your driver suggests, and a long night.

Driving
20–40 minutes
Meals
To be confirmed
Stay
Negombo
Optional

A short walk to the Negombo fish market or the lagoon, if your arrival time and energy allow.

Good to know

This is the only night of the trip in a hotel you will not get to know. It exists so that the drive to Habarana happens on a rested morning rather than straight off a long-haul flight.

Negombo → Habarana · 3.5–4 hours excluding stops

Day 02North to the first base

Easy

Morning

A relaxed breakfast, then the drive north through coconut country and paddy towards Habarana, with comfort stops roughly every ninety minutes.

Afternoon

Arrive at your Habarana base and unpack properly — this room is yours for five nights. The rest of the day is at leisure on the terrace or by the water.

Evening

Dinner at the hotel, and a first look at what the tank does at dusk.

Driving
3.5–4 hours excluding stops
Meals
Breakfast (included) · Lunch & dinner — to be confirmed
Stay
Habarana
Optional

A stop at the Dambulla Cave Temple on the way in, if the timing and the heat suit.

Good to know

The Dambulla caves are reached by a stair climb of roughly twenty minutes with no lift or alternative route to the top. It is never presented as a fixed part of this route.

Habarana → Polonnaruwa → Habarana · About 2 hours in total

Day 03The ancient city at opening time

Easy

Morning

Leave at about a quarter past six for Polonnaruwa, an hour away, to be at the gates as they open. The quadrangle in that first hour is cool, low-lit and almost empty. An electric buggy hired at the site, subject to availability, carries you between the quadrangle, the Royal Palace group and the standing Buddhas at Gal Vihara, so the walking is only the short distance from each parking point to each monument.

Afternoon

Back at Habarana in time for lunch, and then nothing at all. The afternoon is for the pool, the terrace or a long sleep.

Evening

Dinner at the hotel.

Driving
About 2 hours in total
Distance
About 45 km each way
Meals
Breakfast (included, taken early or boxed) · Lunch & dinner — to be confirmed
Stay
Habarana
Optional

A licensed site guide for the morning, who can make the difference between a field of ruins and a legible twelfth-century capital.

Good to know

Breakfast will be an early tray or a box, arranged with the property the night before and subject to what the kitchen can do. Site paths are uneven brick and stone in places, and shoes come off at the sacred monuments — socks are worth carrying for hot ground.

Habarana · About 30–40 minutes in total

Day 04Nothing before four

Easy

Morning

Nothing is scheduled. Breakfast whenever you come down.

Afternoon

Still nothing, until four. Then a short drive to a village tank and a slow boat out onto the water while the light drops, watching the far bank for elephants coming down to drink and the shallows for painted storks and open-billed storks.

Evening

Back at the hotel by dusk for dinner.

Driving
About 30–40 minutes in total
Meals
Breakfast (included) · Lunch & dinner — to be confirmed
Stay
Habarana
Optional

A spa treatment or an Ayurvedic consultation at the hotel during the empty part of the day, arranged in advance.

Good to know

Elephants come down to water at dusk in the dry months and often do not need to in the wet ones. This is a real chance, not a promise, and the boat is worth taking for the water and the birds regardless. Boarding is from a low bank and a hand is always offered.

Habarana → Sigiriya → Habarana · About 1 hour in total

Day 05Sigiriya without the climb

Easy

Morning

A short drive to Sigiriya for the part of the site most visitors hurry past: the symmetrical water gardens on the western approach, the boulder gardens beyond them, and the rock itself standing over all of it. The Sigiriya Museum, air-conditioned and genuinely good, explains what the fifth-century citadel above you actually was.

Afternoon

Back for lunch and a free afternoon.

Evening

Dinner at the hotel, or a barbecue on the terrace if the property runs one.

Driving
About 1 hour in total
Meals
Breakfast (included) · Lunch & dinner — to be confirmed
Stay
Habarana
Optional

The summit climb, for anyone in the party who wants it — roughly 1,200 steps including exposed metal staircases and a caged spiral to the frescoes. It takes two to three hours and the rest of the party can wait in the gardens below.

Good to know

The water gardens and boulder gardens are flat but the surfaces are old brick and grass; the rock summit is not part of this itinerary and is never presented as something you ought to do.

Habarana & the national parks · About 1.5 hours in total, plus park driving

Day 06An afternoon jeep in elephant country

Easy

Morning

Free. A late breakfast, the pool, or a walk in the hotel grounds.

Afternoon

A private jeep collects you around half past two for a safari in Minneriya, Kaudulla or Hurulu Eco Park. Which park depends on where the herds are that week and which reserves are open — the choice is made close to your date rather than printed months ahead. Late afternoon is when elephants come out of the scrub towards the grass on the receding tank bed.

Evening

Back at the hotel after dark, with dinner kept simple.

Driving
About 1.5 hours in total, plus park driving
Meals
Breakfast (included) · Lunch & dinner — to be confirmed
Stay
Habarana
Optional

A morning village walk and a rice-and-curry lunch cooked by a family near the tank — arranged directly with the household, and the most direct look at daily life on this route.

Good to know

Park jeeps are high-sided and reached by a step-up; drivers help, but there is no ramp and no seat belt in the rear bench of most vehicles. Tracks are dusty and jolting. Wildlife sightings cannot be guaranteed, and we will not pretend otherwise.

Habarana → Kandy · 2.5–3 hours excluding stops

Day 07Down to the hill capital

Easy

Morning

A last slow breakfast at Habarana, then the drive south through Dambulla and Matale into the hills. It is the second-longest transfer of the fortnight and still under three hours.

Afternoon

Optional stops on the way: a spice garden at Matale where the plants are explained rather than sold at you, or a brass or lacquer workshop. Then arrival in Kandy and four nights in one room.

Evening

Dinner at the hotel, with the lights of the town below if your property sits above the valley.

Driving
2.5–3 hours excluding stops
Meals
Breakfast (included) · Lunch & dinner — to be confirmed
Stay
Kandy
Optional

A spice garden or craft workshop on the Matale road, chosen around your interests.

Good to know

Spice gardens on this road commonly end with a sales room. Ours are declared upfront, no stop is arranged for undisclosed commission, and you are under no obligation to buy anything.

Kandy & Peradeniya · About 1 hour in total

Day 08A morning under the royal palms

Easy

Morning

A slow morning at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Peradeniya — 147 acres in a loop of the Mahaweli river, on level, mostly paved paths. The avenue of royal palms is the walk to take if you take only one; the orchid house and the great Javan fig are close to it. A garden buggy can usually be hired at the entrance, subject to availability.

Afternoon

Back in Kandy for lunch, and then free.

Evening

Dinner in town or at the hotel.

Driving
About 1 hour in total
Meals
Breakfast (included) · Lunch & dinner — to be confirmed
Stay
Kandy
Optional

A guided botanical walk, which turns a pleasant park into a two-hundred-year-old collection with a story.

Good to know

Distances inside the gardens are longer than they look — the full perimeter is several kilometres. We plan a short loop and let you extend it, not the other way round. Traffic on the Peradeniya road can double the drive at school times.

Kandy · 30–45 minutes in total

Day 09The temple and the lake

Easy

Morning

The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, timed around one of the daily pooja periods so that you see it as a working shrine rather than a monument. Guidance on dress and conduct is given beforehand: shoulders and knees covered, shoes left at the entrance.

Afternoon

The lake path afterwards if you want it, or the covered market and the old town centre, or straight back to the hotel. Kandy is compact and your driver knows where to wait.

Evening

At leisure.

Driving
30–45 minutes in total
Meals
Breakfast (included) · Lunch & dinner — to be confirmed
Stay
Kandy
Optional

The temple museum and the adjoining royal palace complex, which most visitors walk past.

Good to know

There is a short flight of steps at the temple entrance and the interior is walked barefoot on stone that can be cool or warm. Security checks at the entrance can take time on busy days.

Kandy

Day 10Nothing before four, again

Easy

Morning

Nothing scheduled.

Afternoon

Nothing scheduled until four, and then only if you want it: a Kandyan dance and drumming performance in town, which runs in the late afternoon, or a slow half-circuit of the lake at the hour the light softens and the herons come in.

Evening

Dinner wherever you feel like eating.

Meals
Breakfast (included) · Lunch & dinner — to be confirmed
Stay
Kandy
Optional

A tea estate and factory in the hills above the city, half a day, for anyone who wants the tea-country thread without the drive to Nuwara Eliya.

Good to know

Dance performances are seasonal and their timings change; we confirm the actual schedule during your stay rather than printing a time here.

Kandy → Bentota · 4.5–5 hours excluding stops

Day 11The one long day

Easy

Morning

An 08:30 departure — early enough to clear the Kandy road before it thickens, late enough for a proper breakfast. Down through Kadugannawa to the Colombo expressway, then south on the Southern Expressway towards Bentota.

Afternoon

A mid-point break of at least half an hour for lunch and a proper stretch, then the final run to the coast. Arrival in the middle of the afternoon, and the third and last unpacking.

Evening

The first evening by the sea, with nothing arranged.

Driving
4.5–5 hours excluding stops
Meals
Breakfast (included) · Lunch & dinner — to be confirmed
Stay
Bentota
Good to know

This is the only long driving day on the route and it is deliberately left empty — no excursion is ever combined with it. We avoid Friday afternoons on the Colombo approach where your dates allow, and the vehicle stops whenever anyone asks.

Bentota → Galle → Bentota · About 2 to 2.5 hours in total

Day 12The ramparts before the coaches

Easy

Morning

Leave around ten to six for Galle, an hour down the coast, to be on the ramparts at seven. The walls at that hour belong to joggers, schoolchildren cutting across and the fishermen below — the day-trip coaches do not arrive for another two hours. Breakfast afterwards inside the walls, then the lanes: the Dutch Reformed Church, the lighthouse, the old warehouses.

Afternoon

Back at Bentota by early afternoon. The rest of the day is yours.

Evening

Dinner at the hotel.

Driving
About 2 to 2.5 hours in total
Distance
About 60 km each way
Meals
Breakfast (arranged in Galle) · Lunch & dinner — to be confirmed
Stay
Bentota
Optional

The Maritime Archaeology Museum in the old Dutch warehouse, if the morning has not already been enough.

Good to know

The rampart walk is on grass and uneven stone with unfenced drops in places and no handrail. It can be shortened to a single bastion, or replaced entirely by the streets below. Breakfast inside the Fort is subject to what is open at that hour and is not a fixed inclusion.

Bentota

Day 13Nothing before four, one last time

Easy

Morning

The sea, a long breakfast, a book. Nothing is scheduled.

Afternoon

Nothing until four, and then, if you want it, a slow boat up the Bentota river through the mangroves, where the water is flat and the birds are close.

Evening

A last dinner by the coast.

Meals
Breakfast (included) · Lunch & dinner — to be confirmed
Stay
Bentota
Optional

An Ayurvedic treatment or a spa afternoon at the hotel, arranged in advance.

Good to know

Sea conditions on the south-west coast are safe and calm in the December-to-April window and unpredictable outside it. Where the flags say not to swim, we say the same. River boats are boarded from a low jetty with a step down into the hull.

Bentota → Airport · About 2 to 2.5 hours excluding stops

Day 14Departure

Easy

Morning

A final breakfast by the coast, and a departure timed backwards from your flight with a generous margin.

Afternoon

Private transfer north to Bandaranaike International Airport by expressway.

Evening

Departure.

Driving
About 2 to 2.5 hours excluding stops
Meals
Breakfast (included)
Stay
Not included
Good to know

The buffer on this transfer is always built for a bad traffic day, not an average one. Nothing is scheduled on the way to the airport.

Signature experiences

Moments worth travelling for.

The return trip

Every day out on this route ends where it began. That sounds administrative until you have lived it: no checking out at seven, no wondering which bag the chargers are in, no arriving somewhere new at dusk. The room is already yours when you get back.

Four o clock

Three days in the fortnight have nothing on them before four in the afternoon — one at each base. They are not padding. They are the reason the other eleven days are enjoyable, and they can be spent entirely at the hotel without anyone suggesting otherwise.

Water at the end of the day

A village tank at Habarana, the tank beds in the parks, the Bentota river through the mangroves. The late afternoon on this route is spent near water more often than not, which is when the light is best and when the animals move.

Ancient cities, at ground level

Polonnaruwa by buggy, the water gardens beneath Sigiriya, the temple museum at Kandy. Sri Lanka has a reputation for making you climb for its history. On this route it does not — and nothing has been left out to achieve that.

Staying long enough to be recognised

Five nights in one place changes the relationship with a hotel. The kitchen learns what you eat, the driver learns what time you actually get up, and the second visit to a market is a different experience from the first. This is the argument for the whole route.

Physical activity and comfort

Honest numbers, no surprises.

Overall difficulty
Easy

No climb is required anywhere. The longest planned walk on the route is a loop of a botanical garden on level paths.

Hotel changes
Three in fourteen days

One airport night at Negombo, then Habarana (5), Kandy (4) and Bentota (3). Nothing else is unpacked.

Longest driving day
About 4.5 to 5 hours

Kandy to Bentota on day 11, by the Colombo and Southern expressways. It is given a day of its own, departs at 08:30 with a mid-point break, is never combined with an excursion, and avoids Friday afternoons on the Colombo approach where your dates allow.

Early starts
Two, both optional

Polonnaruwa on day 3 (leaving about 06:15) and Galle on day 12 (leaving about 05:50). Both have a later version that trades quiet for a lie-in.

Rest days
Three

Days 4, 10 and 13 — one at each base, with nothing scheduled before four in the afternoon, and each able to be cancelled outright on the morning.

Terrain
Mostly level

Garden paths, town streets, old brick and stone at the archaeological sites, sand at Bentota. The exceptions are declared: the Dambulla stair climb and the Galle rampart walk are optional, and the Sigiriya summit is not part of this itinerary.

Lifts and ground-floor rooms
Not everywhere

Small boutique properties in Sri Lanka frequently have stairs and no lift. We ask about this before quoting, not after, and will move a base to a different property rather than hope for the best.

Customization options.

Run it May to September

Pasikuda replaces Bentota, with a longer closing transfer from Kandy and a longer final run to the airport.

Two bases instead of three

Drop the coast and split the fortnight between Habarana and Kandy, for travellers who want even less movement.

Add nights at any base

Six at Habarana, five at Kandy, or a week on the coast — the shape absorbs extra nights without redesign.

Ground-floor or lift-served rooms

Confirmed at every base before quotation, which narrows the property list but removes the problem entirely.

A wheelchair-accessible vehicle

Arranged in advance where available, with the excursion list reviewed honestly against what it can actually reach.

A national guide throughout

A licensed national guide alongside the driver, particularly worthwhile for the Cultural Triangle days.

Add tea country properly

Two nights at Nuwara Eliya or Ella rather than a day trip — this makes it a four-base journey, and we would say so.

A quieter Galle morning

The later, gentler version of day 12, or the Fort replaced by a Bentota river morning.

Multi-generation arrangements

Connecting or adjacent rooms, split excursions so that different energies are not forced onto the same schedule.

Responsible travel

Travelling well, without grand claims.

We do not make carbon-neutral or conservation claims we cannot verify. We do hold ourselves to practical standards on every journey we plan.

  • Respecting wildlife-viewing distances in the parks and on the tank, and never crowding or pursuing animals for a photograph
  • Working with registered local guides, jeep operators and boatmen where possible
  • Clear guidance on dress and conduct at the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic and at Polonnaruwa
  • Long stays concentrate spending in three communities rather than spreading it thinly across ten
  • Village lunches and craft workshops arranged directly with the households and makers concerned
  • Reducing avoidable single-use plastic, starting with refillable water where practical
  • No off-the-record stops arranged for undisclosed commission — every optional stop is declared upfront
Before you enquire

Important information.

Passport and entry requirements are the traveller's responsibility.

Travel insurance is strongly recommended.

Final availability is confirmed only after booking, and final accommodation is confirmed during quotation.

Four- and five-night stays are quoted as a negotiated package rather than at a nightly rate, and not every property will hold a booking of that length without a deposit. This is the main commercial constraint on the route and it can affect which properties we can offer at your dates.

Wildlife sightings cannot be guaranteed, on the boat or in the parks.

Weather and local conditions may require itinerary adjustments.

Driving times are approximate and the Colombo approach is the least predictable stretch on the route.

Mobility requirements, including any need for a lift or a ground-floor room, should be shared before quotation rather than after.

Dietary requirements should be shared before confirmation so that kitchens hosting you for five nights can plan properly.

Exact inclusions are stated in the final quotation.

Questions, answered plainly

Frequently asked questions.

Three bases in two weeks — do we actually see enough?

The list of places is close to that of a conventional two-week tour: Polonnaruwa, Sigiriya, a national park, Dambulla if you want it, the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, Peradeniya, Galle Fort and the coast. What is missing is tea country and the deep south, because reaching them properly means one-night stops. If those matter more to you than the pace, tell us and we will show you a different route rather than stretch this one.

How bad is the Kandy to Bentota drive?

It is roughly four and a half to five hours on the Colombo and Southern expressways, and it is the only long day on the route. We give it a whole day with nothing else on it, leave at 08:30, break for at least half an hour at the mid-point, and avoid Friday afternoons on the Colombo approach where your dates allow. If it still sounds like too much, the two-base version of this trip drops the coast entirely.

Do we have to be on the Galle ramparts at seven in the morning?

No. It is worth it — the walls at seven are genuinely different from the walls at ten, and the coaches arrive around nine — but it means leaving Bentota at about ten to six. The same morning runs two hours later on request, and some travellers skip Galle altogether in favour of the Bentota river. Nothing else on the trip depends on it.

Will we see elephants?

We cannot promise it. The afternoon jeep goes to whichever of Minneriya, Kaudulla or Hurulu Eco Park the herds are using that week, and late afternoon on a receding tank bed is the best chance the island offers. The village-tank boat is the same story: elephants come down to drink in the dry months and often do not need to in the wet ones. Both outings are worth taking for the water and the birds regardless.

Is there any climbing?

None that is required. Polonnaruwa is covered by electric buggy between monument groups, subject to availability at the site. Sigiriya is visited from the water gardens below rather than the summit. The Dambulla caves involve about twenty minutes of steps and are always optional, and the Sigiriya summit climb is offered only for anyone in the party who specifically wants it.

Can it run between May and September?

Yes, with one change. The south-west monsoon makes Bentota unreliable in those months, so the same three-base shape runs with Pasikuda on the east coast instead. That is a real trade: the beach is better, but the closing transfer from Kandy becomes roughly six hours rather than four and a half, and the final run to the airport is longer too. October and November we would rather you avoided altogether — both coasts are wet at once.

Can you guarantee a ground-floor room or a lift?

Not in advance of choosing the property, which is exactly why we ask about it before quoting. Many of the small boutique houses that give this route its character have stairs and no lift. If a lift or a ground-floor room is essential, say so at enquiry: it shortens the list of properties we can offer, and it removes any chance of an unpleasant surprise on a five-night stay.

Why do long stays take longer to confirm than a normal tour?

Because four- and five-night stays have to be negotiated as a package rather than booked at a nightly rate, and not every property will hold a booking of that length without a deposit. It is the hardest part of running this trip, and it is commercial rather than logistical. It usually means a slightly longer wait for a firm quotation, and occasionally it means a different property at one base.

Is this suitable for someone using a stick or a wheelchair?

With a stick, yes, and this is one of the easier two-week routes in the country for it. With a wheelchair it needs adjusting: an accessible vehicle can be arranged in advance where available, Peradeniya and the Sigiriya water gardens work well, and the jeep safari, the boat boarding and the Galle ramparts do not. We will tell you plainly which parts we would replace rather than promising the whole route.

When is the booking confirmed?

After you approve the final quotation and availability is confirmed at all four properties. The quotation names the hotels and states exactly what is included; nothing is charged before that point.
