Who it suits

Suitable for most adults and for families with older children. Two mornings start before dawn and one day involves a long stairway climb; all three are optional, and the pace can be eased further for travellers over 60 or anyone with reduced mobility.

Overview

What this journey is about.

Most two-week Sri Lanka itineraries put you in a vehicle within an hour of landing and expect an ancient city on day two. This one does the opposite. You are on the coast at Bentota roughly ninety minutes after clearing arrivals, and nothing is asked of you for three nights: the long-haul flight is slept off within sight of the sea rather than in a hotel car park somewhere inland.

From there the route works south and then inland — a first-light drive in Yala, the hill country at Ella with the Horton Plains plateau above it and a short leg on the rail line to Haputale, the hill capital at Kandy — before turning north for the Cultural Triangle. Sigiriya and Polonnaruwa come in the last three days, by which point the island's chronology finally has somewhere to land. The final night sits twenty minutes from the airport, not four hours from it.

Two legs on this route carry real length, and both are quoted rather than discovered on the road: Ella to Kandy at four and a half to five hours, and Sigiriya to Negombo at close to four. Two mornings start before dawn. All four are named below, with what happens if the weather, a permit or your own preference rules them out.

What makes it distinctive

  • Three nights on the coast before the route asks anything of you
  • The ancient cities kept for the end, not spent on day two
  • Both long driving days stated up front, with nothing scheduled at either end of them
  • Every early start has a written alternative for weather, closures and mobility
  • Sold for December to April only — the eastern route replaces it in the monsoon months

The route at a glance

Airport (CMB) → Bentota → Yala region → Ella → Kandy → Sigiriya → Negombo → Airport (CMB)

This journey is a starting point, not a fixed product. It can be adjusted to your dates, interests, pace, mobility, accommodation preferences and budget.

Journey highlights

Reasons this route endures.

Three nights at Bentota, straight off the aircraft

Ninety minutes from the arrivals hall to the sea, then two full days with nothing scheduled before ten. The jet lag is spent on a beach rather than in the back of a vehicle.

The Madu Ganga by catamaran

A morning on the estuary with a licensed boatman — the open lagoon first, then the narrow mangrove tunnels where the engine goes off and the boat is poled through.

A first-light drive in leopard country

Entering Yala with the gates rather than an hour behind them, in a private jeep with a tracker. Sightings cannot be guaranteed; the early start is what improves the odds.

World's End at Horton Plains

A 04:30 departure from Ella to reach the escarpment before the cloud closes it down by mid-morning. Above 2,000 metres, and genuinely cold before sunrise.

The hill line from Ella to Haputale

The celebrated rail stretch taken as a short leg of roughly ninety minutes, with the vehicle collecting you at the far end. Reserved seats are subject to availability and are often gone weeks ahead.

Kandy and the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic

A working temple visited around a puja time, with guidance on dress and conduct given before you arrive, then the flat, shaded gardens at Peradeniya.

Sigiriya and Polonnaruwa, saved for last

A 5th-century rock citadel and the island's most legible medieval capital, reached in the final three days when you have the context to read them.

Day by day

14 days, carefully sequenced.

Open any day for the full plan. The exact sequence may be adjusted around weather, local conditions and your pace, nothing here is set in stone.

Airport → Bentota · About 1.5–2 hours excluding stops

Day 01Ninety minutes to the sea

Easy

Morning

Private meet-and-greet in the arrivals hall at Bandaranaike International Airport, then straight onto the expressway south. Nothing is scheduled between the aircraft door and the coast.

Afternoon

Check in at Bentota and stop there. Most guests sleep, swim, or do both — the beach is a short walk and the rest of the day belongs to you.

Evening

A short first dinner at the property or somewhere nearby your driver knows, then an early night.

Driving
About 1.5–2 hours excluding stops
Meals
To be confirmed
Stay
Bentota
Good to know

Deliberately empty. No sightseeing is scheduled on the day of a long-haul arrival, and this is a short opening leg by the standards of a Sri Lankan arrival day.

Bentota

Day 02Nothing before ten

Easy

Morning

Nothing is scheduled before ten. Breakfast runs late, and the first decision of the day is whether to be in the water or under a tree.

Afternoon

At leisure. Your driver is on hand if you want the Bentota river mouth, the turtle hatcheries along the Kosgoda road, or a short run down to Galle — none of it booked in advance, and none of it expected of you.

Evening

Dinner locally. The beach road has enough choice to make a decision without a plan.

Meals
Breakfast (included) · Lunch & dinner — to be confirmed
Stay
Bentota
Optional

An Ayurveda treatment or a massage, arranged in advance at properties that have a treatment room.

Good to know

Sea conditions vary day to day on this coast. Swim between flags where a beach is patrolled, and take the property's advice on currents before going in.

Bentota & the Madu Ganga · About 1 hour in total to and from the jetty

Day 03The mangrove morning

Easy

Morning

A ten o'clock start for the Madu Ganga: the wide lagoon first, then the narrow mangrove tunnels where the engine goes off and the boat is poled through. Kingfishers, monitor lizards and water birds are usual on this water; none of it is promised.

Afternoon

Back at Bentota by early afternoon, and free again. Nothing replaces the boat once it is done.

Evening

The last Bentota evening, and the last of the sunsets on this side of the island until the very end of the trip.

Driving
About 1 hour in total to and from the jetty
Meals
Breakfast (included) · Lunch & dinner — to be confirmed
Stay
Bentota
Optional

A cinnamon-peeling demonstration on one of the river islands, where a family is working that morning. We can also move the boat to an earlier hour if you want the birds rather than the lie-in.

Good to know

The mangrove channels are shaded but the open lagoon is not — hat, sunscreen and water. Boarding is a step down into a small craft from a low jetty; tell us in advance if that is difficult and we will ask for a larger, more stable boat where one is available.

Bentota → Yala region · About 4–4.5 hours excluding stops; longer with the Galle break

Day 04South along the coast, then inland

Easy

Morning

Leave after breakfast and follow the coast south. Galle Fort is the natural break — an hour inside the ramparts is enough to see why the Dutch built them where they did.

Afternoon

Continue past Matara and Hambantota into the dry country. The landscape changes completely in the last hour: tanks, paddy, palmyra and a great deal more sky.

Evening

Check in near Tissamaharama and eat early. Tomorrow starts in the dark.

Driving
About 4–4.5 hours excluding stops; longer with the Galle break
Meals
Breakfast (included) · Lunch & dinner — to be confirmed
Stay
Tissamaharama or the Yala buffer zone
Optional

A stilt-fisherman stretch near Koggala or the Weligama bay, if the timing and the light suit.

Good to know

The first half of this day is coastal and slow, the second half faster. Comfort stops are planned rather than improvised.

Yala region · About 45 minutes each way to the park entrance, plus time inside the park

Day 05In with the gates

Moderate

Morning

Leave in the dark and reach the entrance for opening, which is the whole point of the early alarm: the first vehicles in have the tracks largely to themselves for the first hour, and that hour holds the best light of the day. A private jeep, a tracker, and four to five hours in the park.

Afternoon

Back at the hotel by late morning. The afternoon is left empty on purpose — a safari morning is more tiring than it sounds.

Evening

An optional run to Kataragama for the evening puja, about twenty-five minutes away, or a quiet dinner where you are.

Driving
About 45 minutes each way to the park entrance, plus time inside the park
Meals
Breakfast (packed) · Lunch & dinner — to be confirmed
Stay
Tissamaharama or the Yala buffer zone
Optional

A second drive the same day on the afternoon gate, for photographers who want the other end of the light.

Good to know

Leopard, elephant and sloth bear all live here and sightings cannot be guaranteed. Park tracks are rough and dusty, the jeep is open-sided, and the first hour is cold enough to want a layer even in the dry zone.

Yala region → Ella · About 2.5–3 hours excluding stops

Day 06Up through the gap

Easy to moderate

Morning

A slow start after yesterday, then the climb inland through Wellawaya and up the Ella Gap — a road that gains most of its height in the last forty minutes.

Afternoon

Arrive around lunchtime. Nine Arch Bridge is a walk of about twenty minutes from the village side, timed loosely around a passing service.

Evening

Ella is small and walkable. Eat in the village.

Driving
About 2.5–3 hours excluding stops
Meals
Breakfast (included) · Lunch & dinner — to be confirmed
Stay
Ella
Optional

A stop at Ravana Falls on the climb, water levels permitting.

Good to know

Train times at the bridge move without notice. We aim for a service rather than promise one, and the walk is worth doing whether or not a train appears.

Horton Plains · About 3.5 hours in total, before and after the walk

Day 07World's End, before the cloud

Moderate

Morning

A 04:30 departure from Ella and an hour and three quarters to the gate by the Ohiya road. The circuit is a nine-kilometre loop across open grassland to World's End and back past Baker's Falls, and it has to be walked early: the escarpment usually closes into cloud by mid-morning and the view goes with it.

Afternoon

Back in Ella by early afternoon, and finished for the day.

Evening

An early dinner and an early night. This is the longest morning on the route.

Driving
About 3.5 hours in total, before and after the walk
Meals
Breakfast (packed) · Lunch & dinner — to be confirmed
Stay
Ella
Good to know

Genuine cold. The plateau stands above 2,000 metres and sits close to freezing before sunrise. Warm layers, long trousers and closed shoes are on the packing list and your Ella property is asked to repeat the reminder the night before, because a week at sea level does not put a fleece in anyone's bag.

Ella & Haputale · About 1.5 hours in total, repositioning the vehicle

Day 08A short leg on the hill line

Easy to moderate

Morning

Little Adam's Peak at your own pace — a graded path, about forty-five minutes up, and the only real climbing today.

Afternoon

The hill line from Ella to Haputale, taken as a short leg rather than a full day on a train: roughly ninety minutes through tea and tunnels, with the vehicle waiting at Haputale station rather than you doubling back.

Evening

Back in Ella for the last night in the hills.

Driving
About 1.5 hours in total, repositioning the vehicle
Meals
Breakfast (included) · Lunch & dinner — to be confirmed
Stay
Ella
Optional

A tea factory visit near Haputale before the drive back, subject to opening hours and whether the factory is running that day.

Good to know

Carriage conditions vary and doorways get crowded; we do not encourage the open-door photographs that circulate online. Boarding is a high step from a low platform, which is worth knowing in advance.

Ella → Kandy · 4.5–5 hours excluding stops

Day 09The long leg, named in advance

Easy

Morning

Leave after breakfast for the longest drive on this route: four and a half to five hours over the Nuwara Eliya road, through Welimada and the high tea estates.

Afternoon

The leg is broken at the Ramboda pass with a proper stop rather than a photograph through a window. Nothing is scheduled at either end of this day, and that is deliberate — a long drive with an excursion bolted onto it is how two-week itineraries go wrong.

Evening

Arrive in Kandy in the late afternoon and settle in. The lake is a short walk from most of the town.

Driving
4.5–5 hours excluding stops
Meals
Breakfast (included) · Lunch & dinner — to be confirmed
Stay
Kandy
Good to know

A mountain road with near-continuous bends for most of its length. Anyone prone to motion sickness should sit forward and take something before the start rather than halfway through.

Kandy · Under an hour in total

Day 10The hill capital

Easy

Morning

The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, visited around one of the daily puja times, with guidance on dress and conduct given before you arrive rather than at the gate.

Afternoon

The Royal Botanical Gardens at Peradeniya — flat, shaded, and the easiest two hours on the route — or the Kandy craft and brass workshops if you would rather.

Evening

A walk round the lake at dusk, then dinner in town.

Driving
Under an hour in total
Meals
Breakfast (included) · Lunch & dinner — to be confirmed
Stay
Kandy
Optional

A Kandyan dance performance in the early evening, where a scheduled show is running on your date.

Good to know

Shoulders and knees covered, shoes removed at the entrance, and the stone underfoot is hot by midday — a pair of socks is worth carrying.

Kandy → Sigiriya · About 2.5–3 hours excluding stops

Day 11North into the dry zone

Easy to moderate

Morning

Leave Kandy after breakfast and head north out of the hills. The temperature climbs and the vegetation thins as you go — this is the clearest change of country on the whole route.

Afternoon

The Dambulla Cave Temple: five painted rock shrines under a single overhang, reached by a covered stairway of roughly 350 steps.

Evening

Check in near Sigiriya and eat early. Tomorrow is a full day, and the day after starts at the gate.

Driving
About 2.5–3 hours excluding stops
Meals
Breakfast (included) · Lunch & dinner — to be confirmed
Stay
Sigiriya, Dambulla or Habarana
Optional

A spice garden or a Matale workshop stop on the way north, chosen around your interests and disclosed as a stop rather than slipped in.

Good to know

Dambulla is an active temple: covered shoulders and knees, shoes off at the top of the stairway, and rock underfoot that is genuinely hot in the afternoon.

Polonnaruwa · About 2.5 hours in total

Day 12The medieval capital

Moderate

Morning

East to Polonnaruwa, the most legible of the ancient cities — enough of the layout survives that you walk a plan rather than guess at one. By vehicle with walking sections, or by bicycle for anyone who wants it that way.

Afternoon

The Gal Vihara rock sculptures at the northern end of the site, then back through the tank country with the afternoon light on the water.

Evening

Back near Sigiriya. An early night — the rock opens at first light.

Driving
About 2.5 hours in total
Meals
Breakfast (included) · Lunch & dinner — to be confirmed
Stay
Sigiriya, Dambulla or Habarana
Optional

An afternoon jeep drive in Minneriya or Kaudulla in place of the second half of the site. Elephant movement between the two parks is seasonal and sightings cannot be guaranteed.

Good to know

Open, exposed and hot. We start early, carry water, and keep the middle of the day short rather than pretending it can be walked through.

Sigiriya → Negombo · Close to 4 hours excluding stops

Day 13The rock, then the road west

Moderate

Morning

At the gate for opening. The climb is roughly 1,200 steps taken in stages, with the frescoes and the mirror wall partway up and the lion's paws before the final flight. Up and down in about two hours at an unhurried pace, and done before the heat arrives.

Afternoon

Breakfast, then the drive west to Negombo — close to four hours, and precisely why the last night sits twenty minutes from the airport instead of in the Cultural Triangle.

Evening

A last dinner on the Negombo beach road, and a repack that is not being done at four in the morning.

Driving
Close to 4 hours excluding stops
Meals
Breakfast (included) · Lunch & dinner — to be confirmed
Stay
Negombo
Good to know

The steepest section is a metal spiral stairway with open sides. Anyone uneasy with heights should say so in advance — the terrace below the lion's paws is a reasonable place to stop and is worth the walk on its own.

Negombo → Airport · 20–30 minutes

Day 14Departure

Easy

Morning

A last slow breakfast, and the fish market or the Dutch canal if your flight is later in the day.

Afternoon

Twenty to thirty minutes to the airport, timed with a proper buffer before check-in.

Evening

Departure.

Driving

Good to know

Kept deliberately light. The long drive happened yesterday, on purpose.

Signature experiences

Moments worth travelling for.

The afternoon you land

Most routes spend the first day getting somewhere. This one spends it stopping. Ninety minutes from the arrivals hall you are on the coast, and for three nights nothing is asked of you — which is why the rest of the fortnight works.

Two mornings that begin in the dark

A park gate at opening and a plateau above 2,000 metres before sunrise. Both are set that early for the same reason: the thing you came for — the first hour of light, the view before the cloud — is gone by nine. Both have a written alternative if the alarm is not worth it to you.

Water at walking pace

The Madu Ganga mangroves with the engine off and the boat poled through the tunnels, then the tank country around Polonnaruwa a week later. Two entirely different waters, and the quietest hours on the route.

Tea, from leaf to cup

A working factory near Haputale shows how withering, rolling and firing turn green leaf into Ceylon tea, and why these hillsides reshaped the island's economy. Subject to opening hours and to whether the factory is processing that day.

Chronology, saved for last

Anuradhapura's successors at Polonnaruwa, then Sigiriya, reached in the final three days rather than on day two. By then you have seen the tea estates that replaced the tanks and the temple at Kandy that inherited the relic — and the ancient cities stop being ruins and start being a sequence.

Overall difficulty
Moderate

Three demanding items — the Horton Plains circuit, the Sigiriya climb and the Dambulla stairway. Each is optional and each has a stated alternative.

Longest driving day
About 4.5–5 hours

Ella to Kandy on day 9, over the Nuwara Eliya road and broken at the Ramboda pass. Nothing is scheduled at either end of it.

Second long leg
Close to 4 hours

Sigiriya to Negombo on day 13, on the eve of departure — which is exactly why the last night sits twenty minutes from the airport rather than in the Cultural Triangle.

Early starts
Two

The Yala gate on day 5, and 04:30 from Ella on day 7 — the Horton Plains entrance is an hour and three quarters away by the Ohiya road.

Cold you will not have packed for
Horton Plains, above 2,000 m

Close to freezing before sunrise. Warm layers are in the packing note and repeated by your Ella property the night before, because a week at sea level does not put a fleece in anyone's bag.

Longest climb
Sigiriya, about 1,200 steps

Roughly two hours up and down at an unhurried pace, with an exposed open-sided spiral stairway near the top. Skippable, with Pidurangala or the ground-level gardens instead.

Terrain

Customization options.

A fourth night at Bentota

The easiest change to make, and the one most often requested after a long-haul arrival.

Swap the coast for the east

Between May and September the south-west does not work; we replace the Bentota and Yala sections with an eastern route finishing at Pasikuda.

Drop the early mornings

Horton Plains and the dawn safari both have gentler substitutes. Say so at planning stage and the route loses nothing else.

Add a second safari

Udawalawe or Bundala alongside Yala, or Wilpattu added on the Cultural Triangle side.

Upgrade accommodation

Move selected nights — or the whole journey — to premium properties.

A specialist guide

A national guide for the full route, or a specialist wildlife or bird guide for the park days.

Gentler pacing

Later starts, an extra night at Kandy or Sigiriya, and the demanding climbs replaced throughout.

Extend from Negombo

Two to five extra coastal nights before flying home, or a Colombo night for the markets and the Pettah.

Responsible travel

Travelling well, without grand claims.

We do not make carbon-neutral or conservation claims we cannot verify. We do hold ourselves to practical standards on every journey we plan.

  • Respecting wildlife-viewing distances at Yala and the alternative parks, and never crowding or harassing animals for a photograph
  • Working with licensed boatmen on the Madu Ganga and registered guides and suppliers elsewhere
  • Clear guidance on dress and conduct at Dambulla, Kandy and Polonnaruwa, given before arrival rather than at the gate
  • Reducing avoidable single-use plastic, starting with refillable water where practical
  • Encouraging locally owned restaurants, craftspeople and experiences over generic chains
  • No off-the-record stops arranged for undisclosed commission — every optional stop on this route is disclosed upfront
  • Following national-park regulations, including zone rules, speed limits and gate times

Questions, answered plainly

Frequently asked questions.

Why does a two-week itinerary start at the beach?

Because most travellers arrive off an overnight flight and the first day is worth almost nothing sightseeing-wise. Bentota is about ninety minutes from the airport, so you are at the sea the same afternoon and have three nights before the route asks anything of you. The trade is that the ancient cities come at the end instead of the beginning, which we think reads better anyway.

Can we run this in July or August?

We would rather you did not. From May to September the south-west monsoon makes both the Bentota base and the deep-south parks unreliable, and reversing the route does not fix it — the weather is on the wrong coast, not in the wrong order. In those months we sell an eastern two-week route instead, starting inland and finishing at Pasikuda.

How long is the Ella to Kandy drive, honestly?

Four and a half to five hours excluding stops, over a mountain road with near-continuous bends. We break it at the Ramboda pass with a proper stop, and we schedule nothing at either end of that day. It is the single longest leg on the route and we would rather you saw it here than found it out on the morning.

How cold is Horton Plains really?

Cold enough to be a problem if you have not packed for it. The plateau sits above 2,000 metres and is close to freezing before sunrise. Warm layers, long trousers and closed shoes are on the packing list and we ask your Ella property to remind you the night before — a week at sea level does not leave a fleece in anyone's bag.

Is the 04:30 start compulsory?

No. It exists because the escarpment usually closes into cloud by mid-morning, so a later departure buys a walk without the view. If it is not worth it to you, the day becomes a tea morning around Haputale with a factory visit — cool, high and finished by lunch. Tell us at planning stage and nothing else on the route changes.

Are reserved train seats included?

We book them where they can be booked, but no seat on the hill line can be promised. Reservations are often gone weeks ahead. If none are available for your date we offer unreserved second class — which can mean standing — or drive the same stretch through Bandarawela instead. The train is a leg of the route, not the reason for it.

Will we see a leopard at Yala?

Sightings cannot be guaranteed. Yala holds one of the denser leopard populations anywhere, and entering with the gates rather than an hour behind them meaningfully improves the odds, but these are wild animals in a large park and anyone promising you a sighting is selling something they do not control.

What happens if Yala is closed?

Block 1 usually closes for part of September and October, and occasionally after heavy rain. The drive moves to Bundala or Lunugamvehera — more open country, better for birds, and Lunugamvehera is a longer run from Tissamaharama. We tell you which one applies at quotation rather than on the morning.

Can the Sigiriya climb be skipped?

Yes. It is about 1,200 steps and the top section is an open-sided metal spiral stairway that is genuinely uncomfortable if you dislike heights. The terrace below the lion's paws is a reasonable place to stop. Pidurangala gives the view back towards the rock, and the water gardens with the site museum give the history at ground level.

Why is the last night in Negombo rather than the Cultural Triangle?

Because Sigiriya to the airport is close to four hours, and doing that drive on the morning of an international departure is how people miss flights. Moving it to the day before puts you twenty minutes from the terminal with a slow final morning instead of a pre-dawn scramble.
