Overview

What this journey is about.

Six days on the southern coast built around movement rather than treatment. Two practices a day — a sunrise session in an open-sided shala and a slower restorative one before dinner — with the hours in between left genuinely empty. There is no consultation, no prescribed diet and no schedule of therapies to keep to.

The route settles rather than travels. Two nights at Ahangama, two at Talalla about an hour further east, and a last night inside the walls of Galle Fort on the way back to the airport. Nothing on the road between those bases takes longer than about an hour and a half. The drive in from the airport on day one is the longest leg of the week, and it is the only one that really counts as a transfer.

It is written for people who have not done much yoga. A private session with the resident teacher on the first afternoon establishes your level, any injury history and what the week should actually contain, and everything after it is adapted from that conversation. Nothing is compulsory, including the sunrise session.

What makes it distinctive

  • Two practices a day, both optional, at a fixed coastal base
  • A private level-setting session before any group class
  • One deliberately empty day with nothing booked at all
  • No treatment programme, no prescribed diet, no consultation
  • The airport transfer is the longest drive on the route

The route at a glance

Airport (CMB) → Ahangama → Talalla → Galle → Airport (CMB)

This journey is a starting point, not a fixed product. It can be adjusted to your dates, interests, pace, mobility, accommodation preferences and budget.

Journey highlights

Reasons this route endures.

Sunrise in the shala

An open-sided timber practice space with palms and the sea below it, usually starting around 6.30am. The sound of the surf carries up through the columns for most of the hour.

A private session on the first day

An hour with the resident teacher before any group class — level, injuries, limitations, and what the rest of the week should look like. It is the piece that keeps a beginner out of the wrong class.

Restorative and breathwork before dinner

A slow floor-based evening session with props and a breathing practice, deliberately unlike the morning. Most people sleep better from the second night.

A plant-based Sri Lankan cookery morning

Coconut sambol scraped and pounded by hand, a tempered dhal, and young jackfruit cooked the way it is done on this coast — then eaten as lunch.

Talalla bay

A long curved bay with far less traffic on the sand than the surf beaches to the west. Whether it is a swimming day depends on the sea, and that changes.

A day with nothing booked

One full day with no arrangements at all beyond the two practices — a swim, a massage arranged that morning, or nothing.

Galle Fort on the last evening

A walk on the ramparts as the heat goes out of the day, then dinner inside the walls before the short run to the airport.

Day by day

6 days, carefully sequenced.

Open any day for the full plan. The exact sequence may be adjusted around weather, local conditions and your pace, nothing here is set in stone.

Airport (CMB) → Ahangama · 2.5–3 hours excluding stops

Day 01Arrival, and a first quiet session

Easy

Morning

Met at Bandaranaike International Airport whenever your flight lands and driven south on the expressway to Ahangama. This is the longest drive of the week and it is planned that way — everything after it is short.

Afternoon

Check in and do very little. The sea is a short walk away and the rest of the afternoon is unstructured.

Evening

A private session with the resident teacher, roughly an hour: your level, any injuries or limitations, what you want out of the week and what the timetable should look like for you specifically. A light dinner afterwards.

Stay
Ahangama
Good to know

Deliberately light. Nothing physical is scheduled on the day you land beyond a conversation and some gentle movement.

Ahangama

Day 02Sunrise practice and a cookery morning

Easy to moderate

Morning

The sunrise practice in the open-sided shala, usually around 6.30am, with the sea audible below. Breakfast afterwards, slowly, and then the cookery session begins mid-morning.

Afternoon

A plant-based Sri Lankan cookery class working through coconut sambol, a tempered dhal and young jackfruit, eaten as lunch when it is done. The rest of the afternoon is free — the beach is a short walk, and the surf breaks along this stretch are worth watching even if you never go in.

Evening

A restorative practice and a breathwork session before dinner, floor-based and unhurried.

Meals
Breakfast (included) · Lunch from the cookery session · Others to be confirmed
Stay
Ahangama
Optional

A beginner surf lesson with a local school at Kabalana or Midigama, arranged on the day and subject to the sea state.

Good to know

The sunrise practice means an alarm around 6am. It is optional and no one is woken for it.

Ahangama → Talalla · About 1 hour excluding stops

Day 03A short move east along the coast

Easy to moderate

Morning

The sunrise practice at Ahangama, then breakfast and a short drive east along the coast to Talalla — about an hour, the shortest transfer on the route.

Afternoon

Settle in and swim. Talalla is a long curved bay with much less on the sand than the surf beaches you have just left.

Evening

Evening restorative practice and breathwork at the Talalla shala, then dinner.

Talalla
Good to know

Talalla has no lifeguard service. Sea conditions vary day to day and are worth checking at the property before you go in.

Talalla

Day 04A day with nothing booked

Easy

Morning

The sunrise practice runs as usual. Beyond that, nothing is scheduled and nothing needs to be.

Afternoon

A swim, a massage arranged through the property that morning, a long lunch, a book in the shade — or none of it.

Evening

The evening restorative and breathwork session, then dinner.

Breakfast (included) · Others to be confirmed
Stay
Talalla
Optional

A massage or treatment, arranged locally on the day rather than pre-booked. Therapist, cost and availability are confirmed at the property, not by us in advance.

Good to know

This empty day is the point of the trip rather than a gap in it. We add nothing to it unless you ask.

Talalla → Galle · 1–1.5 hours excluding stops

Day 05A last practice, then the ramparts

Easy

Morning

The last sunrise practice of the week at Talalla, then breakfast and an unhurried start.

Afternoon

Drive west to Galle, about an hour and a half, and check in inside or beside the fort. The afternoon is free — the fort’s streets are small enough to wander without a plan.

Evening

A walk on the fort ramparts as the heat goes out of the day, roughly two kilometres on uneven stone, then dinner in one of the small restaurants inside the walls.

Stay
Galle Fort
Optional

A guided walk of the fort with a registered local guide, arranged in advance, covering the Dutch and Portuguese layers of the walls.

Good to know

The rampart surface is uneven stone with unfenced drops in places, and it is not lit after dark.

Galle → Airport (CMB) · 2–2.5 hours to the airport

Day 06Departure

Easy

Morning

A slow breakfast and, if the flight timing allows, a short walk through the fort’s streets before they warm up.

Afternoon

Private transfer to Bandaranaike International Airport, two to two and a half hours on the expressway, timed with a clear buffer before your flight.

Evening

Departure.

Good to know

No practice is scheduled on the departure day. This is a real drive on a departure day — traffic around Colombo is the main variable in it.

Signature experiences

Moments worth travelling for.

A rhythm rather than a programme

Two fixed points a day — sunrise and pre-dinner — and nothing between them. It is the opposite of a clinical retreat schedule, and it is the reason people who dislike retreats tend to manage this one.

Finding the level before the class

The first private session exists to stop the most common failure on this kind of trip: a beginner quietly struggling through a week pitched at someone else. What you can and cannot do is established in private, on day one.

Eating the coast

Coconut, jackfruit, dhal, rice and short eats — the plant-based half of southern Sri Lankan cooking is not a compromise here, it is most of the local repertoire. One morning is spent learning to make it.

The empty afternoon

Every afternoon on this route is unbooked, and one full day has nothing on it at all. That is the product, not a shortfall in it.

Stone and sea at Galle

A single night inside a walled town at the end of the week, so the trip finishes with something to look at rather than another beach.

Accommodation style

Choose the level, we match the properties.

We hold no fixed hotel list. Named properties come with your quotation, because the right choice depends on availability, season, your preferences and confirmed supplier rates.

Your choice is carried into the enquiry form below — you can still mix levels night by night there. Nothing here is booked automatically.

Physical activity and comfort

Honest numbers, no surprises.

Overall difficulty
Easy to moderate

Mat-based practice twice a day, pitched to the level agreed in your first private session. Everything outside the two sessions is optional.

Longest driving day
About 2.5–3 hours

The arrival transfer from the airport to Ahangama on day 1. No other drive on the route exceeds about an hour and a half.

Earliest start
Around 6am

The sunrise practice usually begins about 6.30am. Skipping it costs nothing and nobody is woken for it.

Teaching
Confirmed in writing before you book

Teachers rotate between coastal properties and the timetable follows whoever is in residence that month. Style, level and language of instruction are set out in the quotation — we do not assume a beginner will be comfortable in a led-ashtanga week, and this is where that is caught.

Sea conditions
Variable, no lifeguard cover

Ahangama and Talalla are open-ocean beaches. Swimming is on the property’s advice on the day, and some days it is not a swimming coast at all.

Underfoot
Sand, garden paths, fort stone

The only uneven ground on the route is the Galle rampart walk on day 5, which is optional.

Rest opportunities
Extensive

Every afternoon is free and day 4 has nothing booked at all.

Sri Lanka weather varies by region and can change. Two monsoon systems affect different coasts at different times, so no month carries a guarantee.

Customization options.

Add nights at one base

Two to five extra nights at Ahangama or Talalla, keeping the same daily rhythm rather than adding stops.

Move the trip to the right coast for the month

Between May and September we rebuild the same idea as a highland wellness week or on the east coast, where the weather is working.

Private tuition throughout

One-to-one sessions in place of the group timetable, subject to the resident teacher’s availability.

Add a treatment programme

A short Ayurveda or massage series alongside the practice, arranged with a property that has a resident therapist.

Add a surf element

Beginner lessons at Ahangama or Weligama on the free afternoons, weather and sea state permitting.

Skip Galle

Hold the final night on the coast and see the fort briefly on the airport run instead, for people who would rather not move at all.

Responsible travel

Travelling well, without grand claims.

We do not make carbon-neutral or conservation claims we cannot verify. We do hold ourselves to practical standards on every journey we plan.

  • Working with registered local teachers, guides and suppliers where possible
  • Cookery sessions built around local produce and the plant-based half of the regional repertoire
  • Refillable water from the first day, to keep single-use plastic off the route
  • Encouraging locally owned restaurants and small coastal properties over generic chains
  • Clear guidance on modest dress away from the beach, which matters more in southern towns than on the sand
  • No off-the-record stops arranged for undisclosed commission — every optional stop is disclosed upfront
Before you enquire

Important information.

Passport and entry requirements are the traveller’s responsibility.

Travel insurance is strongly recommended.

Final accommodation and the resident teacher for your dates are confirmed during quotation, not at enquiry.

The class timetable is set by the property, and start times may shift by up to half an hour.

Weather and sea conditions may require itinerary adjustments.

Driving times are approximate.

Yoga carries a risk of injury. Declare any injury, pregnancy, recent surgery or medical condition before you travel so the teacher can adapt.

Hotel choices remain subject to availability.

Questions, answered plainly

Frequently asked questions.

Do I need any yoga experience?

No. The route is written for people who have done little or none. The private session on the first afternoon establishes what you can manage, and the group sessions are pitched from that.

Who will be teaching, and in what style?

This is the honest weak point of every trip of this kind, so we handle it in writing. Teachers rotate between coastal properties and the timetable follows whoever is in residence that month — we cannot promise a named teacher months ahead. What we can do is confirm the style, level and language of instruction for your specific dates in the quotation before you commit. A beginner placed in a led-ashtanga week is the most common complaint on this product, and confirming it in writing is how we avoid it.

Is this a detox, cleanse or treatment programme?

No. There is no consultation, no prescribed diet and no schedule of therapies. It is two practices a day with the rest of the time genuinely free. A massage or a short Ayurveda series can be added, but it is an addition rather than the structure.

How early is the sunrise practice, really?

It usually starts around 6.30am, which means an alarm around 6. It is optional on every day, and nobody is woken for it — several people on a typical week skip one or two.

Can I skip sessions?

Yes, and it will not be remarked on. Nothing on this route is compulsory, including the practice you paid for.

Are the classes private or shared with other guests?

The day 1 level-setting session is private. The morning and evening sessions are shared with other guests at the property, and we cannot promise a class size — it depends on occupancy that week. Private tuition throughout can be arranged at additional cost, subject to the teacher’s availability.

Is the sea safe for swimming?

It depends on the day. Ahangama and Talalla are open-ocean beaches without lifeguard cover, and both can run a strong shore break or a rip. Ask at the property each morning and take the answer seriously; on some days the pool is the sensible option.

Why do you not sell this between May and September?

Because the south-west monsoon runs across exactly this coast in that window, and an open-sided shala in the rain is not what anyone is booking. Between May and September we would move the same idea to the highlands or to the east coast rather than take the booking and hope. October is the weakest month island-wide and we do not run it then either.

Is all the food plant-based?

The cookery session is, and southern Sri Lankan cooking is largely plant-based to begin with. Whether every meal on the trip is depends on the property and what you ask for — tell us at enquiry and we confirm what each kitchen will actually do rather than assume.

When is the booking confirmed?

After you approve the final quotation and availability is confirmed, including the accommodation and the teaching arrangement for your dates.
