Who it suits

Suitable for most age groups and for a first visit at any pace. Walking is at leisure and can be adjusted throughout; the one early start, for the Sigiriya climb, is the only fixed demand on the day.

Overview

What this journey is about.

A genuinely achievable first week in Sri Lanka, built on three bases rather than a new hotel every night: three nights in the Cultural Triangle, two in the hill capital of Kandy, and a protected final night near the airport. The route gives ancient cities, living Buddhist culture and an elephant-country safari their own days, rather than pretending seven days is also enough for the south coast, Ella and the rest of the island.

Sigiriya, Polonnaruwa and the wildlife drive are never stacked into a single day, and both ends of the trip are deliberately protected — a late arrival shortens the first day rather than driving four hours after dark, and the final night sits near the airport so an early departure never depends on a long transfer from Kandy.

What makes it distinctive

  • Three bases in seven days, not seven hotel changes
  • A protected first night and a protected last night — neither depends on a long drive at an awkward hour
  • One national guide for the whole journey, with a site guide added at Polonnaruwa where deeper interpretation earns its place
  • The wildlife park is chosen locally on the day, for elephant movement and conditions, rather than fixed in advance

The route at a glance

Airport (CMB) → Habarana / Sigiriya → Polonnaruwa → Dambulla → Kandy → Negombo → Airport (CMB)

This journey is a starting point, not a fixed product. It can be adjusted to your dates, interests, pace, mobility, accommodation preferences and budget.

Journey highlights

Reasons this route endures.

Sigiriya at opening time

The climb is completed before the dry-zone heat builds, walking the water gardens first and reaching the summit while the light is still low.

Polonnaruwa, properly

A dedicated archaeological morning rather than a stop squeezed between two long transfers — the Quadrangle, the Gal Vihara and the royal city at a pace that lets the site read as what it is.

Dambulla on the way through

The cave temples sit directly on the road to Kandy, so the stop uses the day's geography rather than creating a separate excursion.

An elephant-country afternoon

A jeep drive in whichever of Minneriya, Kaudulla or Hurulu Eco Park is working best that week; sightings cannot be guaranteed, but the ecosystem is chosen for the odds, not for convenience.

Kandy, unrushed

The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic and the lake quarter on arrival, then a slower second day for the botanical gardens, crafts or local food instead of another hotel move.

Day by day

7 days, carefully sequenced.

Open any day for the full plan. The exact sequence may be adjusted around weather, local conditions and your pace, nothing here is set in stone.

Airport (CMB) → Habarana · 3–3.5 hours excluding stops

Good to know

Kept deliberately light after a long-haul flight.

Habarana

Day 02Sigiriya, then an elephant-country afternoon

Moderate

Morning

An early start for Sigiriya, walking the water gardens before the climb and reaching the summit while the light is still low and the staircase is quiet.

Afternoon

Lunch and rest, then a jeep safari in whichever of Minneriya, Kaudulla or Hurulu Eco Park is showing the strongest elephant activity that week.

Evening

Dinner at the hotel, with an easier day tomorrow.

Breakfast (included) · Others to be confirmed
Stay
Habarana / Sigiriya area
Good to know

Sigiriya's summit staircase is a single narrow one-way route with real capacity limits; the early start is the difference between a straightforward climb and a long, hot queue.

Habarana → Polonnaruwa → Habarana · About 1–1.5 hours each way

Day 03Polonnaruwa, as its own day

Moderate

Morning

A return drive to Polonnaruwa for a full archaeological morning — the Quadrangle, the Gal Vihara and the royal city, at a pace that treats the site as a destination rather than a stop between transfers.

Afternoon

Free time at the Habarana base — the tank, a village or a bicycle ride, or simply rest.

Evening

Dinner at the hotel, the last night in the Cultural Triangle.

Stay
Habarana / Sigiriya area
Optional

Cycling the Polonnaruwa royal city rather than walking it, where conditions and group comfort allow.

Habarana → Dambulla → Kandy · 2.5–3 hours excluding the Dambulla stop

Day 04Dambulla on the way, then the hill capital

Easy to moderate

Morning

A drive south to Kandy, stopping at the Dambulla cave temples on the way rather than as a separate excursion.

Afternoon

Arrive in Kandy and settle in; a visit to the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, with guidance on respectful dress and timing.

Evening

A walk around Kandy Lake as the light drops.

2.5–3 hours excluding the Dambulla stop

Breakfast (included) · Others to be confirmed
Stay
Kandy
Optional

A traditional Kandyan dance performance, seasonally available.

Good to know

The Dambulla caves involve a moderate uphill walk and steps; dress and footwear should suit a warm, occasionally crowded site.

Kandy

Day 05A slower day in Kandy

Easy

Morning

The Royal Botanical Gardens at Peradeniya, at an unhurried pace.

Afternoon

Free time for crafts, a spice garden or the market, or simply rest — the day is designed to have nothing that must be done.

Evening

Dinner in Kandy, arranged locally or at the hotel.

Kandy → Negombo · 3–3.5 hours excluding stops

Day 06Down to the coast, near the airport

Easy

Morning

A relaxed departure from Kandy, with a stop en route if the timing suits.

Afternoon

Afternoon

Good to know

The short final transfer is deliberate — it is why the last night is spent at Negombo rather than Kandy.

Signature experiences

Moments worth travelling for.

Both ends protected

A late arrival shortens the first day instead of driving four hours after dark, and the final night sits near the airport so departure never depends on a long transfer from Kandy.

The park chosen on the day

Minneriya, Kaudulla and Hurulu Eco Park form one connected dry-zone ecosystem; which one is driven that afternoon is decided locally, for elephant movement and conditions rather than convenience.

Three bases, not seven

Every night beyond the first is spent in one of three hotels, so the week has the rhythm of a journey rather than a checklist of transfers.

Questions, answered plainly

Frequently asked questions.

Is one week really enough for Sri Lanka?

Enough for this route, yes — it is deliberately built around three bases rather than trying to also reach the south coast and the tea highlands in the same week. If you want more, the most common addition is a beach extension or a highland extension afterwards.

Will we see elephants?

We choose the strongest available park for elephant movement that week, but sightings of wild animals can never be promised on any safari.

How early is the Sigiriya climb?

The vehicle typically leaves before 7am so the summit is reached in cooler, quieter conditions. It is the one fixed early start on this route.

Is the Sigiriya climb difficult?

It involves sustained stairs, some of them steep and exposed, over about 90 minutes to two hours at a comfortable pace. Pidurangala opposite is an easier alternative with a comparable view of the rock itself.

Why does the trip end in Negombo rather than Kandy?

So the final transfer to the airport is short — about 30 to 45 minutes rather than three hours from Kandy. It protects an early departure flight.

Can you tell us which wildlife park in advance?

Not with certainty. Minneriya, Kaudulla and Hurulu Eco Park form one connected ecosystem and elephants move between them; the choice is made locally, close to the day, for the best current conditions.

Is this suitable for young children?

With adjustments. The Sigiriya climb and some walking at ancient sites are the main considerations; the pace elsewhere is easy and the three-base structure suits families who prefer fewer hotel changes.

Can we extend into the tea highlands?

Yes — Nuwara Eliya and Ella are the most common addition for travellers with more than a week.

What if our flight lands late in the evening?

The transfer to Habarana still runs that night, and the first Cultural Triangle day is shortened rather than starting with an early Sigiriya climb — that moves to the following morning instead.
