Who it suits

Designed for wheelchair users and travellers over 70 with limited stamina, always travelling with a companion; not structured around family or group needs.

Overview

What this journey is about.

A six-day route built around one question: what can a wheelchair user or a traveller with limited stamina actually reach in the Cultural Triangle, without a fresh access gamble every night? The answer here is one inland hotel, held for three nights, with Polonnaruwa and Sigiriya visited as day trips out and back to the same verified room and the same vehicle.

Sri Lanka has almost no lift-equipped or tie-down-fitted vehicles, so this trip is built around a high-roof van, a portable ramp, a transfer board and two trained assistants, arranged well in advance. Two coastal nights near the airport — one on arrival, one before departure — take the long inland transfer off the two travel days that matter least for stamina, and put it in the middle of the trip instead.

Nothing here is oversold. Sigiriya rock itself, at roughly 1,200 steps, is not part of this trip; what is included is the water gardens, moat and museum at its base, visited early while the ground is calm and the stone is still cool.

What makes it distinctive

  • One accessible room and one vehicle, verified once rather than re-checked nightly
  • Two full day trips from the base — Polonnaruwa and Sigiriya — each returning to the same room
  • Every approach mapped in advance; the longest is roughly 200 metres of level ground
  • A rehearsed two-assistant transfer for the safari jeep, with the option to stand the day down
  • Coastal rest nights on both the arrival and departure days, not a single long inland transfer either way

The route at a glance

Airport (CMB) → Negombo → Habarana → Polonnaruwa → Sigiriya → Minneriya → Negombo → Airport (CMB)

This journey is a starting point, not a fixed product. It can be adjusted to your dates, interests, pace, mobility, accommodation preferences and budget.

Journey highlights

Reasons this route endures.

Polonnaruwa's Quadrangle and Gal Vihara

The vehicle repositions at each monument cluster, so no single approach exceeds roughly 200 metres of level ground.

Sigiriya at first light

The water gardens, moat and museum at 07:00, on flat but uneven brick and gravel; the 1,200-step rock climb is not part of this trip.

A safari with a rehearsed transfer

An afternoon jeep safari in Minneriya or Kaudulla, using the same two-assistant transfer technique as the rest of the trip, with the option to stand the day down.

One base for three nights

A single, checked and confirmed accessible room at Habarana, held for three consecutive nights while Polonnaruwa and Sigiriya are reached as day trips.

A table-height cookery demonstration

Set up at the hotel's own table height rather than in a standing kitchen, so there is nothing to reach up or bend down for.

An evening beside the Habarana tank

A firm bund path with the vehicle in sight throughout — a quiet, unhurried first evening at the base.

Day by day

6 days, carefully sequenced.

Open any day for the full plan. The exact sequence may be adjusted around weather, local conditions and your pace, nothing here is set in stone.

Signature experiences

Moments worth travelling for.

A single verified base

One room and one vehicle, checked and confirmed once, rather than a fresh access assessment at a new hotel every night.

Level ground, mapped in advance

Every approach on this route has a known surface and a known distance before you arrive — the longest is roughly 200 metres, at Polonnaruwa.

A rehearsed transfer, not an improvised one

The same portable ramp, transfer board and two trained assistants are used at the airport, the temples, and the safari jeep alike.

Slow evenings, not packed ones

Free afternoons and a quiet walk beside the Habarana tank sit alongside the two day trips, so no day asks for two demanding activities in a row.

Accommodation style

Choose the level, we match the properties.

We hold no fixed hotel list. Named properties come with your quotation, because the right choice depends on availability, season, your preferences and confirmed supplier rates.

Your choice is carried into the enquiry form below — you can still mix levels night by night there. Nothing here is booked automatically.

Suitability

Physical activity and comfort

Honest numbers, no surprises.

Overall difficulty
Easy

Every included activity is reachable on level or firm ground; nothing requires standing, climbing or scrambling.

Vehicle and transfers
High-roof van, portable ramp, two trained assistants

Sri Lanka has almost no lift-equipped or tie-down-fitted vehicles. Wheelchair users transfer to a fixed seat for the drive, using a portable ramp and transfer board, with two trained assistants at every transfer. Arranged well in advance, subject to availability.

Longest single approach
About 200 metres, level

At Polonnaruwa, the vehicle repositions between each monument cluster so no continuous stretch of ground exceeds roughly 200 metres.

Sigiriya rock
Not part of this trip

Around 1,200 steps with no accessible alternative. This itinerary covers the water gardens, moat and museum at the base only, on flat but uneven brick and gravel.

Temple access and heat
Bare feet required; early visits only

Stone surfaces at religious sites become uncomfortably hot to the touch after around 10:00, so temple visits are scheduled early or left out of the day.

Safari transfer
Open 4x4 jeep, rehearsed transfer

The same two-assistant technique is used to board the jeep. If it is not comfortable on the day, the safari is stood down; wildlife sightings cannot be guaranteed in any case.

Responsible travel

Travelling well, without grand claims.

We do not make carbon-neutral or conservation claims we cannot verify. We do hold ourselves to practical standards on every journey we plan.

  • Working with the same trained transfer team and drivers each time, so technique and equipment are consistent and checked in advance
  • Clear guidance on dress and conduct at cultural and religious sites
  • Reducing avoidable single-use plastic, starting with refillable water where practical
  • Encouraging locally owned restaurants and experiences over generic chains
  • No off-the-record stops arranged for undisclosed commission — every stop is disclosed upfront

Questions, answered plainly

Frequently asked questions.

Is Sri Lanka actually set up for wheelchair travel?

Not in the way some destinations are — there are almost no lift-equipped or tie-down-fitted vehicles here. What we arrange instead is a high-roof van with a portable ramp and transfer board, and two trained assistants for every transfer. It works well within its limits, and we are direct with you about where those limits are.

Can we climb Sigiriya rock?

No. The rock is around 1,200 steps with no accessible alternative, so it is not part of this trip. You visit the water gardens, moat and museum at its base instead, on flat but uneven brick and gravel.

Why stay in one hotel for three nights instead of moving around?

Because we can verify one room and one vehicle properly, rather than gambling on access at a new hotel every night. Polonnaruwa and Sigiriya are both reached as day trips from the same base.

What happens if the wheelchair transfer into the safari jeep isn't comfortable on the day?

The safari is stood down and the afternoon is spent at the hotel instead. There is no obligation to attempt a transfer that does not feel right on the day.

Are wildlife sightings guaranteed on the safari?

No. Minneriya and Kaudulla are reliable parks for elephants in season, but sightings of wild animals can never be promised.

How much notice do you need to arrange the vehicle and assistants?

As much as possible. Suitable vehicles and trained assistants are limited in number, and we book them well ahead of your travel dates, subject to availability.

Why is the Sigiriya visit so early — 07:00?

Two reasons: the ground is calmer before the day's coach groups arrive, and the stone at religious sites becomes uncomfortably hot to touch after around 10:00. We do not schedule temple visits later in the day.

Can a wheelchair user travel this route without a companion?

We strongly recommend travelling with a companion. The two trained assistants handle transfers, but a companion is who makes day-to-day decisions and personal care straightforward.

What is the ground actually like, day to day?

Level or firm ground throughout: paved paths at the hotel, level stone terraces at Gal Vihara, and brick and gravel — uneven but flat — at Sigiriya's water gardens. The longest single stretch between vehicle stops is around 200 metres.

Is the accessible room guaranteed?

It is checked and confirmed at the point of quotation, then reconfirmed before you travel — but like any specific hotel room, it remains subject to availability until booking is complete.
